Did some practice painting tonight with one of the paints I will paint the truck with (Dupont Croma Premier SS tonight, may opt the Premier BC/CC, but that complicates lots of things like jams, interior and two tone etc).

Used a DeVilbis Finish Line HVLP Gravity gun w/ 1.6mm and 9psi as called for.

Dupont suggests reducing 5-10 to increase flow out, but since I want to avoid runs I shot the paint mixed w/ just activator.....

My problem was getting the paint to go on wet and smooth.......on the 3rd coat I had the gun tip only 2" from the panel and it went on great!, like glass! then it ran..............

guess I'll need to reduce it by the suggested 5-10%, but how close and how fast should the gun be?

I'm paraniod of runs, but want that nice wet look......

sounds like you need to up the pressure, 2inches is way way to close. (paging marinsr's paint gun setup thread) i would think that bc/cc would be BETTER for two tone. you have more room for "error" with bc/cc two tone than ss. the ss you would have to tape it perfect, and there would always be a line. but with bc/cc the line is covered by the clear.

thanks >X<, been going back an forth for two months on the SS vs BC/CC.......trouble is BC/CC is wet-on-wet, which means you can't pick away and do this and that...........after the runs and dust I got last night in the garage, (where this truck will get painted) I am leaning more to the BC/CC.......

How do I measure "pressure at the tip", I have the regulator on the handle............close enough to be "the tip" right?

what gun are you using? first you should set it to the settings in the book that came with it. do a search for martinsr's paint gun setup basics, it has everything you need to know. i dont understand what you mean by "do this and that"? a blazer is one big piece, so is not like you can paint it in a million pieces. you might have to conquer more at a time (like interior one day, then jams another) but the end result will be better with bc/cc

[QUOTE= How do I measure "pressure at the tip", I have the regulator on the handle............close enough to be "the tip" right?[/QUOTE]

First off the pressure at the regulator and tip are not the same the pressure at the regulator will need to be much higher more like 30 to 40 psi or so, the gun regulates this down to the 9 to 10 psi TIP pressure. If you are too low the gun wont atomize and the paint won't lay down. Do look in the FAQ for Martinsr post on gun setup he goes into this much better than I can.
With the HVLP you will need to be pretty close maybe 6 inches or so. Again you just need to practice a bit.

Good luck

More pressure for sure & thin the paint out. Use a viscosity cup if you have to. You were probably so close at 2" you were actually blowing a run into it. By thinning it, you actually allow it to be atomized easier. By staying away from the truck allows some of that reducer to dry out between the gun & the surface you're spraying. When in doubt about pressure, too much is better than not enough. (I'm sure somebody here will bash me about that one though).

You all were right! I has set the pressure regulator on the gun at 8psi. According to the gun spec sheet you need 23psi at the gun to get 8psi at the tip............
