some one posted about opinions on flat finishes.

i would like to hear more about the products and techniques people are using to get these finishes. i want to do a seude black on my '67, but i want it really black (dark?) and with some sheen on it, not completly flat black like you get when using primer/ sealer alone.

also i think i would prefer it in a single stage. wouldn't that make it easier to match if additional body mods are added down the road?

thanks for any input

I've used the flattening agent in PPG basecoat/ clearcoat.

I just added it to the clearcoat. It came out too glossy, so I added more in the last coat to flatten it even further.

It still came out a little too glossy for my tastes, so I scotchbrited it to dullen it some more.

It's been on there for like 5 years, still looks good.

I heard a rumor that PPG (i think) was going to introduce a whole new line of flat paints. Then agian it is a rumor.

PPG's DCU 2060 clear is a PRE-FLATTENED clear with about 5% gloss.

A flattened SS or clear would provide MUCH more protection then a primer or sealer would. Primer/Sealer is NOT meant to be exposed to UV rays, if this occurs it can chaulk or turn grayish.

Tx Fire, you got the look i'm after, only i want black, i like the amout of sheen you got.

i read an article over the summer in one of the truck magazines about a suede dupont finish but i can't find the article or any info about the product.
there is a PPG supply i'll be going by today, in know a guy there and will ask him about the those new PPG flats. as well as the DCU2060

i'd like to see some flat or seude reds also, i may do my interior in it instead of glossy.

one guy that's helping my with body stuff likes Matrix the other guy likes PPG. what brand products do you guys prefer.

i'm beginning to wonder if it was just a flatener they had introduced, it seems everybody's got a flatener now?

Dupont makes a new suede finish called "HOT ROD BLACK". Haven't tried it, but saw a magazine article that gave it very good reviews. From what I saw, the finish isn't flat black, more of a sheen. Looked good. I'm ordering a gallon for my 69 gmc shortbed for this summer. Be nice if someone had some experience with it, including the primer. Anyone?

If you want to go black, lots of companies make a "Satin Black", which is kind of in-between flat and gloss.

Haven't done a vehicle with it yet, but it's what I used on my bike to get that "hot rod look".:
