are you refering to aerosol cans of paint. if so, yes if it is going to be exposed to the weather as it will slow the effects of oxidation and fading. if you do use a clear coat, get some that is compatible with the paint.

if you are refering to automotive paint that is mixed and sprayed in a gun and want to clearcoat, use a base/clear system and go for it. there are single stage paints out there that don't require a clearcoat. hope i answered your question.

Putting rattle can clear over rattle can color is like trying to drive a railroad spike with a 14 oz hammer. Hitting it twice will not do much more than hitting it once. :)

If you need to use rattle can panit, just prep it as well as you can, spray a few light coats and wax it after it had cured. Keep it simple.

it's not hard, have done quite a few times on small parts. if you use a base/clear "rattle can" system you'll have few problems, but you must spray the base coat lightly, and only enough to cover before clearing and spray on lights coats of clear also as it will look milky if applied heavy. i've even colorsanded and buffed it and you could'nt tell the diff from any other piece if done with patience and done right.

i speak from experience, and if i want to drive a railroad spike i'd use a feather (with a pile driver attached to it) mastercraftkpt   :D
