View Full Version : Chop Top for a daily driver?

I have an opportunity to pickup a 78 cab that has been chopped 4" and has shaved doors. Wondering how practical this would be for a daily driver.

A few issues I can see:

The glass and gaskets will have to be cut. Aside from the cost and risk of cutting safety glass, how well could I expect the the front and rear windows to seal.

The seat will have to be lowered to recover head room, I am 6' 2" so head room is an issue. I assume the column drop will also have to be changed. These trucks stock seem to have a fairly uncomfortable seat and wheel height. Could I expect that to get worse?

How practical are shaved doors in a midwestern winter where ice and snow happen? I see images of the doors frozen shut and a dead battery.

My truck is a lowered short stepper, so its obvious I am willing to compromise on using it as a truck, but I am wondering if the chop top is going beyond daily road wars and trips to the home improvement store?

Can anyone share their experience?

I think haveing a chop top would be very cool. They do have a certin look you don't see on the road very often. But I don't think that it would be a good daily driver. I'm also 6'2" and would get very tired of driving something that was not roomy and Comfortable every day. But for sure as as a weekend or cruiser vehicle.

I would pass, personally. For one, I'm not sure if you know the persons ability who performed the chop and shave. Could be a real nightmare, especially if it doesn't have glass already, theres got to be a reason.
I had shaved my drip rails on my old 85 and the doors always froze shut in winter, I'm assuming with the other mods that those would be gone as well. I had to literally grab the handle and stick my boot on the cab and yank to get the doors open.
And the last thing is kind off a personal thing for me but I think just about anything after the 50s looks horrible with a chop, but thats just my opinion.

Go for it
Get low buckets
Get a GOOD alarm with the truck pop option for your doors
Have a hidden switch for alarm failure
Sand blast all the glass don't water saw it! Buy two fronts-1st one
probally won't fit perfect. Use it as a template when it is close!

The worst part is the side window tracks, they are a bitch to re align.

If you want it, do it. I had a 56' F100 daily driver that had the handles shaved, wasn't a big deal. Ocassionaly you'll run into a problem, but for the most part it was fine. Just make sure to install some kind of manual door opener as you will have to deal with a dead battery some time. It really sucks to have to bust out a window to enter your vehicle, don't ask me how i found this out.
