View Full Version : Is Painless Painful? Striker169 03-28-2005, 11:27 PM My brother and his friend said that the painless kits were painful to install who here has used them and what did you think? and do you have any pictures of the install? chickenwing 03-29-2005, 11:25 AM I installed one in my 72 c-20. Was pretty straight forward. The template for the fuse box was not sized properly. Make your own template to avoid my problem. If you have no a/c the das harness is pretty much plug in. Has provisions for pwr windows/door lock too. Have to re-use your side marker and tail-light sockets. Dunno if I would use again. I have read a lot of positive threads of other harness manufacturers that are cheaper. Run a search for "Painless" and read those threads.... You should be able to find the other brands that way. Or maybe someone else will chime in with em. Striker169 03-29-2005, 09:28 PM I installed one in my 72 c-20. Was pretty straight forward. The template for the fuse box was not sized properly. The price isnt much of the question just the instal of the kit how complcated was it how long did it take you to do? and are they setup for HEI? chickenwing 03-30-2005, 02:24 PM Yes they are set up for either points or HEI. It uses a ballast resistor instead of resistor wire for points. Install time can be done in a day took me two. I really took my time trying for the best routing possible. The hardest was wiring the side markes so they blink with the turn signals. Called up Painless for an assist. They were happy to help. Definately not difficult. Striker169 03-30-2005, 04:29 PM Alright then I think I am going to get their wireing kit. Do you have any pictures or does anyone have pictures? CorVM 03-30-2005, 04:58 PM I bought a painless wiring a couple weeks ago and I'm in the process of installing it. I've never done this much wiring and it is going fairly easy. Only thing is I have a/c and the harness isn't set up for it. For the price of original-style headlight and engine bay wiring harnesses, the Painless wiring harness can be had for a little bit more, plus it includes additional curcuits for power windows/locks, electric fuel pump, tach, HEI, newer style alt, etc. Striker169 03-30-2005, 07:09 PM I bought a painless wiring a couple weeks ago and I'm in the process of installing it. Yeah I saw that I was wondering if anyone else had other pictures chickenwing 03-31-2005, 10:39 AM No pics. Think how YOU want yours routed. I routed mine from the firewall to inside the left fender, down by the horn assy., up through and under the radiator support member and finally out underneath the passenger battery box. That harness is practicly invisible now. CorVM 03-31-2005, 07:41 PM I don't have the engine part done yet, so I don't have any pictures. I haven't decided how I will route the wires since the front end is kinda torn apart. Any other suggestions? Striker169 06-19-2005, 12:03 PM Randy70C-10 where did you get those like rubber gromet type holders? ECM 06-29-2005, 06:11 PM You can get rubber lined steel clamps from places like Del City or Waytek fairly cheap - around $0.10 ea for a 100 or less. If anyone here is thinking of doing any wiring on their truck, go to those two sites and request their free catalogs. Things like ignition switches, split loom, bulk wire, and even zip ties are far cheaper than I've been able to source them locally. Fill out the free catalog request forms on these sites and wait 7-10 days. http://www.waytekwire.com http://www.delcity.com Oh, and if you look, you can find those clamps around. The ACE Hardware up the street sells them in the same asile as the nuts and bolts, in the same bins even. They have a good assortment of automotive stuff... It just costs a hair more than buying 100 on the net. :D Striker169 06-30-2005, 01:02 AM You can get rubber lined steel clamps from places like Del City or Waytek fairly cheap - around $0.10 ea for a 100 or less.
