View Full Version : Progress pics of my '68 GMC Extend-a-cab 68gmcdually 04-01-2005, 06:50 PM I'll start with a couple of before pics, keep in mind that this only came into the shop to have a 5.0 l 5 speed installed. I will post more pics as I come across the time too. N2TRUX 04-02-2005, 06:34 AM Nice solid start. Now where are those progress pics???? 67_C-30 04-02-2005, 09:55 AM Yeah, Man!! We need PROGRESS!!! ;) 67shortie 04-02-2005, 10:46 AM Yes, pics or ban :rndll: 68gmcdually 04-02-2005, 10:50 PM Sorry, I was going to post some progress pics today, but a simple 6 hour round trip parts run, turned into 13+ hours of driving through one of the worst snow storms of the winter. Too think that yesterday was so nice here I was going to pull the other vehicles out the storage shed, boy am I glad that I didn't. I will post the pics as promised when I get back to the shop. Have a great weekend. 68gmcdually 04-02-2005, 10:53 PM Here are the only two pics that I have on this computer, (hard drive went for a trip). The first is of the cargo/brake light and the second is the original owner's manual that I scored off of ebay, thanks to CPNE. 67_C-30 04-02-2005, 11:27 PM Here's another of your truck.. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/attachment.php3?attachmentid=126357&stc=1 68gmcdually 04-03-2005, 10:50 AM Thanks, that one is from a long time ago, it is currently painted inside and on the underside and remounted to the new chassis, the box is sitting on the frame and the front fenders are mounted. We are hoping to have it run under its own power by the end of the week. Canadian694x4 04-03-2005, 07:32 PM Can't wait to see the Pic's Jim! Great to hear of your Progress! 68gmcdually 04-04-2005, 03:51 PM Here are some more before pics, I am trying to keep them all together on one thread to make it easier on everyone. 68gmcdually 04-05-2005, 05:39 PM Here is a better pic of a 930 emblem as we discussed earlier. Thanks alot. 68gmcdually 04-05-2005, 08:32 PM Here are a couple of pics of the drivetrain, and one of the bottom side of the cab while it was still on the rotisserie. The last one is of my helper for the evening. 68gmcdually 04-09-2005, 04:04 PM Here are a couple of pics, the first three are the way I bought it and the last two are of the way I destroyed a perfectly good driving 1992 Chevrolet 3500. LUV2XCLR8 04-09-2005, 10:00 PM :ww: :cong: :phat: 68gmcdually 04-10-2005, 10:31 AM Here's a couple of chassis pics again, I promise that some real good pics are coming shortly. 68gmcdually 04-10-2005, 10:33 AM Some of the interior before and after paint. 68gmcdually 04-10-2005, 10:36 AM Here is how it is almost sitting right now, I am hoping to get the dually fenders fabricated this week sometime and then sandlast and paint the box. This truck is going to be one long unit, especially with the car trailer behind it. 72MARIO 04-10-2005, 11:18 AM That looks awesome ! What rims are you going to use ? You are going to have to spend nearly every night up there to get it finished by june Eh ? I would recomend not sandblasting the box. You will warp the sides for sure. Your dad should know that. Unless you mean Media blast that would be oky. I am going to a wrecking yard next saturday I will check for that emblem you need it's a 930 GMC right ? Any other small parts you need ? Later, Mario lukecp 04-10-2005, 12:21 PM Very sweet setup....can't wait to see the finished product. Much cooler old truck on a modern chassis :D 68gmcdually 04-10-2005, 08:53 PM 72MARIO: Thanks for the compliments, I believe that I might have three 930 emblems now (thanks to longhorn71 for one). I don't believe that I am going to be sandblasting the box as I stated, probably media blasting or taking it down the road for some soda blasting. YELLOW72CUSTOM: Thanks as well, I really wanted the modern day chassis and running gear because I plan on pulling the car trailer or our fifth wheel house trailer with this alot, the original drum brakes all the way around just wasn't going to cut it. 67_C-30 04-10-2005, 11:11 PM WoW!! That bad boy is coming along quite nicely! Its after midnight here, and you are making me want to go out and get back to work on mine right now!! ;) 68gmcdually 04-11-2005, 10:25 AM 72MARIO: These are the caps and rings that I am going to put on it, with the original painted rims. Thanks to 67-C_30 for locating them for me. BLAZERMAN 04-11-2005, 12:51 PM Cant wait to see this one done, looks great!! Canadian694x4 04-11-2005, 11:21 PM Jim It's Looking GREAT!!!! I'm totally amazed...Great Work. Keep us posted! Brian :canada: :bowtie: :metal: :gmc: :flag: 68gmcdually 04-12-2005, 07:11 AM Thanks Brian that means alot to me. I am going to real busy on this truck since I still need it done by the first of June so hopefully I will have more progress pics quickly. 68gmcdually 04-13-2005, 07:21 PM Well the guys at my parent's shop did a complete tune up and started running new gas lines today, should be only a few days until fire up, I HOPE. Also did a dry run with the '00 Silverado seats and got the hood stripped and in primer. At this rate I am confident that it will make its June 4 th deadline for being complete. joelboxt 04-13-2005, 08:26 PM that ex-cab would look so much better if you made the small windows the same hight and style as the door windows.. but you do good work. joel 68gmcdually 04-13-2005, 10:14 PM that ex-cab would look so much better if you made the small windows the same hight and style as the door windows.. but you do good work. joel I agree on the same height,we couldn't find the right size windows at that time, the side windows are the same height as the rear window though, so hopefully it will work out ok. I really didn't want to go with the same style as the front window, I wanted them to really stand out. DBLSPRT68 04-14-2005, 01:51 AM James, I think it's COOL! :metal: I can't wait to see the completed truck. Keep up the great work. After Super Chevy this weekend and trying to sell my Bel Air, I'm going to start working on my truck again. David Iforgotmypassword 04-14-2005, 08:27 AM James, this is similar to what I have been planning. I have a few questions, if you don't mind. How much did you extend the cab? What did the windows on the extension come off of ? And how did you extend the roof? Looks great, by the way. Brian >X< 04-14-2005, 10:03 AM iforgotmypassword, you should post in the 67-72messageboard section, you'll have more people see your post and help you 68gmcdually 04-14-2005, 03:48 PM We stretched the cab 20" which was not near enough as we have figured out now. The side windows are out of the back barn doors of a 1950ish Dodge Panel Truck. They where the closest thing to what we wanted at the time, I wanted something that welded in and looked factory, not the cut the hole and bolt them in like on conversion vans. Every other extend a cab truck that we looked at had too much curviture in the glass. We extended the roof using regular sheet metal, I have some indepth progress pics of the cut that I can post later. Iforgotmypassword 04-15-2005, 08:13 AM James, if you had it to do over, how much would you extend the cab? I was thinking 24 inches on the cab, and off the box. Brian 68gmcdually 04-15-2005, 11:25 AM If I had to do it again I would extend minimum of 24 - 27", the longer you go the more out of proportion it gets, but the more practical it gets. My front seats currently touch my back seat, which is now being altered, the only reason that is is because I went with '00 Silverado seats which are very deep. Yukon Jack 04-15-2005, 02:48 PM That is really looking nice. Your work looks top notch. ezernut9mm 04-15-2005, 06:36 PM i just wish i had your ambition. great work! 68gmcdually 04-15-2005, 10:37 PM i just wish i had your ambition. great work! Unfortunately it is not all my ambition, I owe a lot of credit to my father, mother and two brother's and my parent's 3 employee's, if it was up to me it would have been a simple body on the frame paint job. Thanks for all of the great feedback, this truck has to be done for some completed pictures on June 4, for my wedding. Then we are hoping to take it to Prince Edward Island and area for our honeymoon, I think that I am going to be really busy. 68C15 04-16-2005, 06:21 AM hmmmmm.....extended cab truck with back seat. newlywed couple. romantic island. :dnd: :gi: sixty8c10 04-16-2005, 07:01 PM i would like to see those extended cab in-depth progress pics. your truck is looking great good luck reaching your goal. 68gmcdually 04-16-2005, 09:54 PM Well I said that I was going to be "real busy" didn't I. I did mean working on the truck but I guess you could take it the wrong way. 70'_402 04-19-2005, 03:28 PM what color is that paint? 68gmcdually 04-19-2005, 03:37 PM It's inferno red pearl metallic, a 2001 era Chrysler colour. custom67gmc 04-23-2005, 01:17 AM how are you doing the outer dulie fenders? i thought matbe you could use step side fnders? good lookin truck 68gmcdually 04-24-2005, 05:56 PM That is exactly what I am going to be using, I have already purchased them. I had a set of '73 + stepside fenders but decided not to use them because of the less rounded wheel arch so I tracked down a pair of '67 - '72 ones with out the spare tire cutout. 68gmcdually 04-25-2005, 08:43 PM Some pictures from tonight with the outer duals mounted, before the fabrication of the stepside fenders, she is going to be one wide load. 72MARIO 04-25-2005, 11:03 PM Holy Crap ! That's Awesome ! 67_C-30 04-25-2005, 11:23 PM WOW! Man that thing looks tough! What is the width of that rearend from backing plate to backing plate? That's exactly the look I want for mine, and it would save me a lot of time if I knew the dimensions. Many thanks! 68gmcdually 04-26-2005, 10:51 AM Thanks all for the compliments, I am on my way to town to take some pics, my dad just phoned and the fenders are being fabricated and tacked on for a dry run, I can hardly wait. I am like a little kid on Christmas morning. 68gmcdually 04-26-2005, 11:49 AM Here are the pics of one of the fenders just hanging there, all marked out for the cut. Ric83 04-26-2005, 12:27 PM Man, that thing is turning out awesome!! I am all excited for you, ha ha. :c2: 68gmcdually 04-26-2005, 06:37 PM Here are a couple of more pics with the fenders cut and tacked on for final fit before media blasting them. The heel of the drivers side fender is pretty grim, but nothing a sheet of body metal won't fix. The last pic is an idea that we are toying around with for the marker lights for the fenders. arkracing 04-27-2005, 09:13 AM Did you use a second set of doors for the "ex-tended" part of the truck? A second Roof? what did you end up doing about the floor? bend it yourself? Look like a lot of work...but going to be one sweet ride when done 68gmcdually 04-27-2005, 02:57 PM We custom made everything, minus the window frames with regular sheet metal. The floor was kinda tricky because the new frame ramped up behind the cab. We probably would have used a door but didn't have any available at the time, now however I have two. It was a lot of work and I never would have been able to complete it myself, many thanks go out to my Father and his employee's. 67_C-30 04-28-2005, 06:59 AM How did you go about marking the fender for the cut. Looks you nailed it!! They fit great! This is also something I have got to do in the near future, and any help would be appreciated. Thanks! 68gmcdually 04-28-2005, 10:40 AM Actually I had virtually no participation in the cutting or marking of the fenders, my dad's employee, Grant did that, he is a mastermind when it comes to things like that. In fact he manufactured virtually everything custom on this rig. In a couple of the pics you can see where he marked it out with tape while it was on the truck, I wish that I was around while the cut was happening but I had to be at work to bank roll this whole operation. 72MARIO 04-28-2005, 12:19 PM Hey I found 2 more of thoes 930 badges if you need them I can tell you where they are at. 68gmcdually 04-28-2005, 12:40 PM Thanks, I have a "decent" pair now but would like to find another pair to get re-chromed. Pass on the contact info if you have it. They wouldn't be at Minaker's by any chance would they? LUV2XCLR8 04-28-2005, 02:28 PM :bling: Palf70Step 04-28-2005, 03:22 PM I'm really liking what your doing. Wanna through one together for me too? :D 68gmcdually 04-28-2005, 04:10 PM Thanks for all of the great compliments. We are working on putting in the wiring harness and some other internal components then hopefully paint on the cab monday and glass later on in the week. I give it 3 weeks to show time. 72MARIO 04-28-2005, 05:01 PM Tauton Road and Thickson.is Whitby Arts auto wreckers. I would have to call you to explain where the truck is in the pile. I was going to pull them but it look like I would have to remove the fender. They were a good pair to get rechromed. I got my Stainless line ordered today. The line comes in 20 foot straight lengths. Brake and fuel lines should aways look awesome in SS. I also got the Painless Fan wiring kit ordered. I am hoping for the endof may. I guess were are both cutting it close for our deadline Eh ? 68gmcdually 04-28-2005, 05:33 PM Thanks Mario: My dad has dealt with Art before in his classic car business. Your right about pulling the fender, either the outer of the inner fender need to be removed, or do what my uncle did and place a pry bar behind the emblem and break the studs off, the other way being the approved way although. Any idea how much they want for them? I am glad to hear that you should be done in May too. Mine would have been done by now but my dad, who is the driving force behind this had a couple of pretty serious heart attacks in February and he spent a while in Sunnybrook and still is not up to working much on it with me at night, plus I have been swamped with work and wedding plans. It is going to be so worth it come June 4 to see it sitting outside that church while I am tying the knot and on June 5 we are leaving for a well deserved couple of weeks away, just sharon and me and the truck (i hope). 72MARIO 04-28-2005, 06:07 PM Well I was thinking of taking a hatchet we use for roofing and a beater hammer. Smack Smack. and just cut the emblems out of the fender. I bet you could get out of there with them for under 10 dollars. Just drop em in the mud on the way out and they would be worth $5. Do you need any new parts for you truck ? You could come down here and we could got to Arts and Bills Truck Shop. Next Saturday is good for me. Oh and thanks fot the TTT. Will get some new pics Sunday. I have to pickup my girlfriend from school up in New Liskeard this friday. So I wont get much done on the truck this weekend. Sorry to hear about you dad I hope his recovery is speedy. I bet he is just a big of help with you truck as my dad's been with mine. I have to ask. How's your wife to be like the TRUCK ? Later, Mario Brainchild 04-28-2005, 06:39 PM that is going to be a cool ride. 68gmcdually 04-28-2005, 06:55 PM Sharon actually liked it in its original 250 inline 6 three on the tree form better than what we have done for some strange reason. I am sure that her views will change when it is complete. Also she really doesn't like dual wheels on a pickup she thinks that it now has child bearing (big)hips, hence the personal licence plate on order "68BIGHIP" As far as next Saturday goes I probably have to work, being in a tourism related business stinks but I will try and back out of it and get someone to cover my truck since parts hunting sounds like more fun to me. Also my dad is doing great, I am at the shop right now helping him load up for Stirling Flea Market this weekend, my parents are taking there Bill Hirsch paint line and Flex liner stuff and vending which I am happy that he is still able to do it right now. 68gmcdually 04-28-2005, 07:57 PM How did you go about marking the fender for the cut. Looks you nailed it!! They fit great! This is also something I have got to do in the near future, and any help would be appreciated. Thanks! After asking an expert, namely my father about the cut I now know the secret. All they did was take a piece of metal about an inch wide and about 4" long, drilled a hole 3" from the end and inserted a pencil into it, then ran the piece of metal along the boxside and the pencil marked the cut line 3" out. Pretty elementary when you think about it, but it worked. LONGHAIR 04-29-2005, 04:58 AM That is called "scribing" and it can be done with a compass just as easily. You just line the parts up so they are in proper relation to each other (touching at the highest point) an set your compass to the widest gap. Then just pull it along the edge you are trying to copy. 68gmcdually 04-29-2005, 06:53 AM You could use a compass but making stuff from scraps lying around the shop is much more fun. We probably would have used a compass however but didn't have one around at the time. crews 04-30-2005, 11:25 AM WOW!! Great pictures and what a great project!! I guess I need to venture in this forum more often to catch up on everyone's latest progress.... I sent a pm regarding the rear fenders and your thoughts on how to attach them. I am really impresssed with the overall fit and form that the truck has taken with the dually fenders. You ( and the crew helping) did an outstanding job on the alignment of the fenders. Are you planning on lowering it at all? ( I hope I didn't miss the fact that it is a 4wd somewhere..that would make that question look stupid  ) Are you planning on trimming the inside fender lip of the original bedside? I know on the "factory" duallys ( later models) they actualy trim the wheel opening for tire clearance. Anyhow- keep us informed as the truck nears completion. Great job !!!! :metal: :metal: :metal: 68gmcdually 05-01-2005, 12:08 AM Thanks crews: I will go into better detail about the fender mounting on Monday or so. As to the height of the truck: that is a bone of contention right now. The only way to make it sit lower would be to channel the box even more than it is now, seeing as though I used a factory cab/chassis the frame comes up behind the cab considerably ( We chopped about 3/4" out of the box crossmembers already, I would imagine that in a year or so we will take the floor out of the box and set her down to where she belongs, either that or air bag it which won't give us much as the cab is up so high to start with, and you are right is not a 4X4. I was worried that everyone would think that it is though with the height factor. It sits about the same heighth as my '97 Ford F-250HD work truck. 72MARIO 05-01-2005, 09:12 AM You can get the rear springs Dearched and for the front get drop spindles or even a 3/4 ton spring. I believe a 1/2 spring might also fit in there too. I kinda like the way it sits. Palf70Step 05-01-2005, 02:02 PM ......... I kinda like the way it sits. :agree: Looks like a truck ready to do truckin stuff.! 68gmcdually 05-01-2005, 03:29 PM Just got back from the trade show, ready for a nap before dinner. I am going to leave it the way it is for now and see how it performs the idea behind the truck is to haul a car trailer with my buddy's original '60 Ford F-100 on it to attend some shows. The '60 drives really nice but top speed is about 40 miles an hour, even after the rear end gear swap. Needless to say I don't want to downgrade the springs since I need them to handle the weight. 72MARIO: How was your trip to New Liskeard Friday? 72MARIO 05-01-2005, 10:25 PM Loooooooong. But good. She is home for good too. Got her stuff all unpacked in her parents place saturday. She starts her new job in Aurora monday. Should be good. Now it's goig to be tought finding time to finish the 67.... oh well it will get done. Shoot me a PM if you can get saturday off. later, Mario 68gmcdually 05-03-2005, 01:38 PM I finally got to sit in the truck on real bolted down seats a few minutes ago. Man did that ever feel good. Won't be long now till it might move under its own power. |
