Just curious. I'm looking for places to fish within an hour or so of Atlanta.
My ideal idea of fishing is tossing around a plastic worm, spinner bait, rat-l-trap or rapala. Usually prefer the worm. I don't like fishing for striped bass, catfish or panfish, dunno if there's any decent largemouth fishing here?
I don't have a boat yet (waiting to finish the truck), I enjoy fishing from the shore almost as much as from a boat.
I passed by Lake Oconee on my way home from Washington DC yesterday. I've been to Alatoona (to goof off, no fishing), but never Lanier.
Anyone got any spots?

The only time I went to Alatoona the water was up a couple feet higher than normal. I didn't see much structure or docks - I launched near some damn. The water seemed pretty deep and clear, looked good for striped bass. Not sure about anything else.
I'm definitely trying to hit Oconee this weekend. I gotta get a license some time this weekend. Too much to do not enough time :D

I've fished in Allatoona and Carter's Lake. Carter's Lake has some nice picnic areas around banks you can fish from. Carter's Lake is near Ellijay, about an hour or so north of Atlanta.

You should try checking out some of the Public fishing areas close to you. They are not as crowded as the big lakes and are usually managed for fishing in mind. Most of them have jetties and nice docks to fish off of. Try www.Georgiawildlife.com to find one close to you.

I made it out past Oconee today and hit Sinclair, I think. Somewhere near a bridge that's less than a mile south of a large GA Power damn. water was shallow, pretty muddy, lots of rocks and sticks underneath. Didn't catch much of anything. Tried to find a way to get to the other side of the damn with no luck. Spent more time driving than fishing, but achieved my goal: some R & R....:D
Thanks for the advice, Bayouboy, I'm checking that out now.

I live in the Northwest corner of Georgia and have fished most all of the local tri-state area over the years. (Southeast Tennessee, Northwest Georgia and Northeast Alabama) That being said, I usually have had better luck on Lake Weiss in Alabama than in any of the other large lakes around me.

How 'bout Lake Russell. Drive from N.C. to fish there myself. Good Bass and Crappie.

There's some decent fly fishing around, too. The Chattahoochee River is pretty convenient and I hear is home to some fish, somewhere. The best spot I know of, ok the second best because I'll never tell the best spot, is Smithgall Woods Conservation Area in White County - about an hour and a half north of ATL.

I know this is much further south but Lake Seminole in the southwestern corner of the state has incredible large mouth fishing. I favor a top water plug called the Devil Horse. Worked slowly the biggins just cant seem to stay away.
