View Full Version : Mystery Virus/spyware
1971 Cheyenne 05-20-2005, 12:34 AM Hey there, I've been dealing with this for the last few days with no avail so I decided to try here.
My computer will go to certain webpages such as this one, google, gmail, and about half the other random web pages. However, my computer is not able to access MSN messenger, ebay, any microcoft webpage, weather.com, etc.
I searched for days with spyware/virus cleaning programs and while they found other stuff, this problem was not solved, finally I resorted to reformatting. After reformatting and reinstalling Windows XP Pro, i still have the same problem. Thus, we assumed that when we formatted, it did not format everything, so the virus was still embedded in the (insert technical term here, i forgot it), SO my brother hooked up the hard drive to a linux box of his, and formatted it on there, supposedly you are able to totally clean it off that way? Well I installed XP yet again, and the same problem came up. Grrrr.
A friend advised that the problem may be in the Master Boot Record which would not get fixed with a format (?) and that I should replace it with a new one?
My moms computer is on the same network, and is having the exact same problems, my brother has 3+ boxes on the network though, and is not having any such issues. We are relatively sure that it is not a network problem and that the issue resides in me and my moms computers.
Any input?
EDIT: I ran hijack this on this box before I did all the reformatting. I did have the "Nail" virus, and supposedly fixed it with the nail patch, nfc if that worked though. I can install hijack this again, and post another log, if need be.
shifty 05-20-2005, 12:46 AM Please post a logfile.
NAIL is a real PITA to get rid of.
It sounds like something has hijacked your HOSTS file (look for a HOSTS line in your HijackThis logfile...if it's there, fix it).
PS - uh ... forgot to mention .... this came after a format? Nothing is going to stick around that long. If you don't find a virus after an online scan (example: http://housecall.trendmicro.com ), then you don't have one.
If it's spyware, adware or a trojan, it will show up in a hijackthis log.
If it's none of the above, it's hardware related. But I've never seen a NIC get picky about what pages you're surfing to.
shifty he has run housecall etc since ( just PMd me to tell me hes off to do somethin) Nail kept showin up the first few logs i saw, and was gone the last one. He still had major issues goin on hijack wise... which is why he reformatted. ( and lead to his post here )
i know these are old but will give you an idea of what he had goin on.. this was teh last hijack log pre reformattin

shifty 05-20-2005, 11:21 AM Yeah, there's not even a mention of HOSTS in there.
This is what I would be interested in:
Make a list of websites you cannot reach.
For example, say I cannot get to google.com and msn.com, but I can get to ebay.com.
I want to find out why it's not possible to do that.
I would research like this:
Open a DOS prompt (Start>Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt)
This will open a black box.
If you can't reach msn.com, type this: nslookup msn.com
I would like to see the information that is returned.
'nslookup' is a small program in Windows that converts a domain name into an IP address by contacting your ISP (typically). I would want to verify the output is correct.
Also, it would be very helpful to know what your network setup is...who do you use for internet service? What is the model # of your modem? Do you have a gateway/router/firewall on your network? I need the model number of that also. I would like the modem number of your network card as well (if it's on-board, I want the chipset information)
Lastly, do you have any other information you can provide which you might think of as helpful?
I've seen one case where I searched on the WINDOWS folder of a computer for a file named HOSTS and a second hosts file turned up in some place like C:\Windows\Help (which is not the correct location, it should be in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc) and it was causing some problems like this. This shouldn't be true after a format and reinstall though.
1971 Cheyenne 05-20-2005, 12:39 PM Okay, first I did the command prompt thing, I entered a bunch of websites I cannot access, and google, which I can access.
nslookup google.com (I can get to this one)
Server: ns1.defcon-3.net
Address: 10.1.1.3
Non-authoratative answer:
Name: google.com
Addresses: 216.239.39.99, and a few other IP addresses
nslookup msn.com (I cannot get to this one)
Server: ns1.defcon-3.net
Address: 10.1.1.3
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: msn.com
Address: 206.68.172.246
From that, it appears that I am getting out to the webpages, cause its finding their IP addresses the same as on webpages that work? Another thing, my brother did this thing in some program where he could see what the packets were doing. It looked like the packets were going out to the webpages that don't work, but my computer was not allowing them back in?
We are running a linux-based home network, running on DSL, that is provided by www.rockisland.com (a local ISP). Usinng a NetGear RT-311 router. Other than that, I don't know too much about our network, i'd have to wait till my bro got home and ask him.
I am running an onboard NIC, Model: NVIDIA nForce MCP networking controller.
And yeah it seems unlikely that the Hosts thing would be misplaced, especially after reformatting 3 times now, and using a different copy of XP Pro than I originally had on the computer. no clue..
Thanks for all the help.
1971 Cheyenne 05-20-2005, 01:09 PM UPDATE!!!
My mom took her computer over to a freinds house, and hooked it up to the internet through their hub, and she got everything fine. Therefore the problem is not in our computers at all, or in our hardware. The issue resides in my brothers network. SO I guess the ball is out of my court and its up to my brother to mess with everything now. Grrr 3 reformats for nothing... lol
shifty 05-20-2005, 02:33 PM I was about to tell you that it's internal to your network. Your brother's Debian-based server is handing out DNS for your network. I'm guessing he's probably doing iptables, ipchains or some kind of routing on his end. I don't think that RT-311 will do anything complex enough to mangle or drop packets.
Sorry I couldn't get to your before your reformatted :)
stingray72 05-20-2005, 02:55 PM We are running a linux-based home network, running on DSL, that is provided by www.rockisland.com (a local ISP). Usinng a NetGear RT-311 router. Other than that, I don't know too much about our network, i'd have to wait till my bro got home and ask him.
If your bro needs help with that linux-based home network let me know. I run one and have probably gone through the same problems. I might be of some assistance.
1971 Cheyenne 05-20-2005, 03:13 PM Hey,
Brians brother here. We were having DSL issues last week, I changed the ADSL MTU size, and since I run TCP Doctor and have my MTU set right on my machine, my net worked but thiers didn't. I had had TCP Doctor installed a while ago so I didn't realize what was going on because mine worked. Shifty is right, Debian router, custom firewall via IPTABLES. RT-311 is just a backup, not primary. Everything works great now.
C
hey caleb, long time no see :) glad to see you fixed it........ sounds like that odd problem we had years ago eh? glad to see it worked out!
shifty 05-20-2005, 04:18 PM Hey,
Shifty is right, Debian router, custom firewall via IPTABLES. RT-311 is just a backup, not primary.
WOOHOO! SHIFTY WAS RIGHT FOR A CHANGE! OMG ITS A MIRACLE :hi2:
Just kidding.
Your bro set things up the same way I woulda set em up. Smart man.
