View Full Version : Amps, Subs, and head units
shadetree 05-24-2005, 01:03 AM This forum can be used (abused?) for discussion about sound equipment. I'm into sound systems for auto, built a decent system for a couple hundred. I know there are a lot of talented people on this truck board network, let's hear about some of your sound systems! And, for the ones just getting started, let's hear a few questions.
tylermckee 05-25-2005, 03:08 AM where would you put a sub in a 67-72 with the in cab gas tank? not much room under the seat
muddpile 05-26-2005, 12:18 AM A pair of shallow 8" or 10" subs would fit, one on each side. I've seen it done with JL Audio W0's before.
shadetree 05-26-2005, 12:43 AM I moved my gas tank out back & under (where GM shoulda put it!), and designed my own enclosure for a 12" dual voice coil sub. There was room for twin kicker boxes with 8" woofers & top mounted tweeters. I found room for 6 other speakers in that cab, also.
Senor_paco 05-28-2005, 03:35 PM Shallow? You mean behind, or under the seat? I have my seat all the way back, and have about 6-7" at the base of the seat. I have a sony 1000w amp, driving one pair in each door (yes, 4 6x9s in the doors), and want to get another amp for a pair of subs, but the only issue is who has slim subs that don't cost a fortune. Any ideas? I'm not too knowledgable on this. THe amp issues is taken care of, just speakers are needed. Thanks.
neonlarry 05-28-2005, 06:57 PM I have seen a bazoka type mounted next to the gas tank on the P\S where the jack goes.
shadetree 05-28-2005, 11:38 PM With the gas tank out of the cab, there is more than enough room for subs.
68w/sbc406 05-29-2005, 01:20 PM would you go with 2 10s or 12s? whats a good brand for subs? JL, Rockford, Infinity($$$)?
68haywagon 05-29-2005, 06:24 PM My truck doesn't have a system yet, but I'm working on it. I got a radio for the truck from a board member, I just haven't installed it yet.
My van on the other hand does. I'm running the Pioneer DEH-P47DH special fit headunit (45x4 peak, 22x4 rms). 2 4x6"s in the front stock locations and 2 6-3/4" rounds in the back stock locations off the headunit amp.
The back has a Rockford Fosgate Punch 1200w amp with remote bass controller pushing 2 12" Rockford Fosgate Punch P3 subwoofers.
All powered by a Optima yellowtop battery through 8ga Rockford Fosgate wiring to a 1 farad Stingpro digital capacitor.
It's obnoxious when I want it to be, but sounds very good the other times. I bought a Radioshack dB meter that read to 125dB and was just maxxing it out.
This was my first stereo install with some modifications. Originally I had 2 12" jensens powered by a 500w jensen amp. The amp died so I upgraded a bit. My next addition is gonna be components in the front and back running off a seperate amp and a headunit upgrade. Maybe in-dash DVD :hmm: ?? I doubt that though. I need to save money for the truck so that stuff will be a while off.
I have in the installed about 10 other stereo systems and have learned alot along the way.
Pics are as follows:
1. Pioneer headunit
2. Remote bass controller
3. Capacitor, Amp, Subs
4. Battery and in-line fuse
Let me know what you think/suggest/have questions about. If you are near me and need help with car or home audio let me know.
Mike
speedracer 05-30-2005, 05:13 PM ive put a 12" sub in a custom box firing down between two bucket seats. and pioneer makes a sub called a flat panel its only 4" thick ive put two of those under a bench seat and they sounded great. I hear you can get them for about 150 a piece.
