What's the deal?? I just stick the key in the ignition and turn ON (not even to START) and the BRAKE light comes on and stays on. I have hit the brake pedal numerous times and have set and reset the emergency brake and it stays on! I checked the brake fluid in the master cylinder.....I am stumped!!!

The light indicates when there is a problem with the system. First check all lines, hoses and wheels for leaks. It actually indicates when there is a difference in pressure between front and rear brakes and the pressure switch is located on the proportionin/combination valve next to the master cyl. If no leaks are found, usually bleeding the system will fix it.

On my truck, when I release the parking brake the pedal, sometimes it doesn't latch in the up position. When this happens my brake light on the dash stays lit. I just lift up the pedal with my foot until it catches and the light turns off. It's a quick thing to check to I thought I'd mention it.

Unplug the anti-lock connector, turn the key back on then off. Leave the box unplugged for about 10 minutes, then plug it back in. Mine did the same thing two years ago and has not came back on since. A mechanic told me this is how GM resets them sometimes. The box is the long narrow box by the master cylinder.

I don't think that applies to a '72

sweet72 is right. You have a problem in your proportioning valve, pressure is not flowing properly. Your master cylinder does not have to be low for this to happen. If you have a sudden loss of fluid say to your rear brakes it may not all flow out of the proportioning valve if it is stickey inside. and if it does not purge itself neither will the master. I would try bleeding the rear brakes and if it seems to be not working properly make sure that the wheel cylinders are not froze up and rusted.
