I'm seriously thinking about learning how to weld, so I was wondering -- Does anyone know a good place to go in the Philadelphia Area? I just want to learn for personal use, not a profession. I found one place that teaches in the Philly area, but after speaking with him (and not being able to understand a word he was saying) I decided to come on here and see if anyone on here knows of anywhere.

Thanks!!

I was thinking about taking this class (http://bcths.com/weld_tech.html) this summer but I never looked into it. There is one in the fall...it's either a night or weekend kinda thing...I don't know the price either :dum: . This is in the Philly 'burbs. Check out a tech highschool closer to you. I want to learn to weld too....I'm thinking about going to the Tech Highschool up here in W-B this fall.

I couldn't find anything within Philly city limits when I was looking. I ended up heading out to Medford, NJ for a night course. http://www.bcit.cc/AdultEd/parttime.htm#weld They had 3 total offerings, a full time 360 hr course, 4 nights a week course (6pm to 10pm Brutal) and a saturday course that was like 6-8 hrs long. I did the 4 night a week course. I heard rumblings that the saturday course was really really hobby orientated, but then the night teachers we full time welders by day trying put out certification level instruction so it was biased I'm sure.

I taught myself to weld. I have a couple of buddies who are pro welders (one works for Sunoco and the other for a welding company) and I had them show me the basics and then I would try it. They would tell me what I did wrong and make me redo it(until I could get it right EVERY time I welded it). Took me about a week but I did it. Now, I don't know everything and I didn't spend much time at all on stick/arc welding(I hate it) but the MIG & TIG I got down pat... :)

If you have a good welding supply store in the area, some of them offer night coarses for either mig, tig & stick welding. If their really on the ball they will also administer state certification tests. We have a couple of welding supply shops in Rochseter, NY that do both.
