View Full Version : Online Images and Red X's

The last few days I notice more and more web page images are becoming red x's. For some reason my browser is not displaying them.
Within the last few days I uninstalled a bunch of programs I never use and updated my windows XP.
Anyone have any idea why I am not getting some of this images and how to fix it?

I do not have any parental controls unless they installed automatically with the windows updates or something.

Thanks,

Also, if I send an email with attachments and then open that email, some images are shown in the email and some are red x's. But if I click on the image attachment at the top it will open the image. WTF?

I have been having a similar problem the past few days. Was just on ebay, and the images on the home page do not show, I get a 403 Error code where their images should be showing. Glad to know I'm not the only one having a problem. Seems to be an IE problem, and as usual Help was no help.

Sounds like your browser has been hijacked.

Quick and easy, effortless solution: Since you're using XP, please do a "System Restore" and restore the computer back to a previous date prior to when you installed that software and/or prior to when the problem was first noticed.

Hopefully this will fix the problem.

However- I will tell you this - Getting '403' "forbidden" HTTP returns is a bad sign, usually an indicator of a decent spyware infection.

Well I tried going back about 1-1/2 weeks and it didnt solve the problem.
I never get the '403' error, just the red x's.
Anything else to try?

I've seen several similar requests come across the help desk forum I've been moderating the past few years. The only real solution I've seen absolutely work is "format and reinstall". I hate to ever mention this, but I've even had people uninstall and reinstall IE or just repair install on IE and it still doesn't fix it.

If you're not prepared to take that step, Google for HijackThis. Download the software to somewhere safe on your computer....then scan with it, save a logfile, and post the text contents of the logfile here and I'll see if I see anything that may be causing the problem. We can at least try to clean it up before taking drastic measures.

Really, aside from the DPF in there, your system is about clean as a whistle.

I hate Sony Vaio's, but I don't see anything glaringly wrong. Missing file or two for a couple of services. I see your system took a dive at some point in the past (hence the Kernel Fault Check in the 'Run' section).

Nothing there that would suggest otherwise. Nothing hijacking your HOSTS file.

This leaves two things I can think of:
A proxy, firewall or other software could be causing the problem, causing a '403'.
Try using another browser (install Firefox or something temporarily).

If the problem persists with two browsers, maybe it's time to crack open the XP Media Center disc, click Start>Run and type: sfc /scannow

What is a DPF?
SurferNetwork is a program for listening to radio stations online.
Is this something bad?

DPF = downloaded program file. There's nothing to it. What I mean when I said "clean" is "stock". I should have been more specific. Almost all of the services loaded at boot, all programs that are running resident, and all other settings are nearly bone-stock for a Sony Vaio laptop.

Didn't mean to scare you :)

Its not a laptop though. Its a VGC-RA822G. Does that make any difference?
Thanks again for the help.

I've never touched a Vaio desktop. I didn't realize Sony kept making them. Again, my bad.

I should have realized it wasn't a laptop - there's no Apoint driver loading at boot for a touchpad. :\

It's been a rough day at the office. I'm still here. Have some Koreans visiting to test a new box they're manufacturing.

Yeah, they still make them :).
We have a few here in the office and like them better then other machines we have had.
