Hi there, im currently stationed in south Korea right now, in a month i'll be on my way to Fort Hood Tx. Heres the problem i have, im originally from california, and so is my truck, (1976 chevy stepside) and in cali, its due for a smog test when i get back on leave, and cali smog test suck! And my truck has never passed a smog test, i always know "people" who can get it to pass. What is the criteria for texas smog insp? if there even is one. Is there a rolling smog exemption law? As much information would be much appreciated, i need to know if i need to get it smoged in cali, or texas when i get there? Thanx, joe

hey man, i live in harker heights which is like 5 minutes from fort hood and you dont have to worry about smog testing down here although i think maybe in metro areas like dallas/houston but i could be wrong.

There are just a few counties in Texas that require the smog testing (mainly Dallas and Houston.

This September Travis and Williamson counties (Austin) will start requireing smog testing on all cars/trucks 2-24 years old...mine is 25...caught a break.

The following site has all the counties and info.

Welcome to Texas! I can't wait to go get my '77 State inspected. As said, all it requires is a safety inspection, including your horn, brakes, tire tread depth, etc. It also costs less, since there's no emissions test to be done. If I remember correctly, the state inspection fee in counties where there IS emissions testing required (on vehicles 2-24 years old), the breakdown is something like $12.50 for the safety inspection, and $27 for the emissions, for a total of $39.50. I know the total of $39.50 is right, and I'm at least close on the breakdown. Anyone know for sure?
