PRess CTRL+ALT+DEL. Go into task manager. Go into the processes tab. Click the box to show processes from all users. Sort the processes by the Image Name column. Kill this process:

Open Hijackthis. Scan. Put a checkmark next to these lines, then proceed to the next step.

Click the "fix" button in HJT once all checkmarks are in place.

Reboot. Scan again. Look for two things in the log:

1) Any lines that you see above.

2) Any lines that look like this with random uppercase letters and numbers between the []'s and in the name of the .exe file and - also - with an 'r' at the end:

You know, that's one of the fun things about these infections...

The most common infection people have is one where there is something with absolutely random characters in the 04-Run section that starts itself on boot and renames itself after each reboot. These items almost always run from the System32 folder. They almost always have a unique random series of characters in the []'s of the Run line in HJT. The characters are most often 6, 7 or 8 chars in length for the filename and [] name.

Often times these files clean themselves up when you kill them - or when you kill them, they just create a new randomly named .exe file and run it. It's such a pain in the ass to deal with sometimes (see your other post and you'll see what I mean). The crappy part is, it's almost impossible to know what the hell the spyware, adware, trojan worm or virus is that's causing the thing to appear in the first place and I would say that 50% or more of all computer users who have internet access have got one.

Fortunately, scanners to find these things are becoming more sensitive as people become more aware of these infections and turn the .exe files over for review to their favorite virus/adware/trojan combatants.

I got a computer from my next door neighbor, an Windows 98 machine (second editon) He must have hit a porn site that registered itself somehow. After the computer has been turned on for one hour, it tries to go to a porn site whether you're on line or not. If you're not online it opens Internet Explorer (dial up so you get the password window and it doesn't actually dial). If you're online, it just goes there in a new window. I've run Spybot and Adaware and it's still there. It's always after one hour of the computer being turned on, and then tries again one hour later if you still have the computer on, and will continue after each hour of use.

Will this Hi-Jack This program you guys are talking about (or a program like it) help find this and eliminate it? Not a real problem, no kids use the computer, just me, it's just mainly an annoyance if I'm sitting there working on an ACAD drawing or something. (might be different if was at least a decent porn site...just kidding)

Hijackthis will help eliminate it, but you need to understand - Hijackthis (HJT) only scans the computer and shows a log of all the stuff that's written itself into the normal places in Windows that spyware, viruses and trojans most probably would write themselves into. Once you scan the machine, you have the ability to remove the bad entries by putting a checkbox next to them and clicking the "FIX" button in HJT to remove them. BEWARE: you can seriously screw up your computer if you do not know what you are doing with HJT.

So, yes, download HijackThis, unzip it to a dedicated folder (not a temp folder), scan the Win98 machine, save the logfile, open it in notepad, post the contents in a new thread and I'll help you get rid of the nast ystuff that's taken over the machine. :)

My problem is solved, and if it helps someone else who is having problems, I could care less if my thread gets hi-jacked (J/K)..No pun intended. We are all here to help each other with trucks, but what people forget to think about is, in order for us to get help about our trucks, we need to turn our computer on, run internet explore, sign on to this board, then ask our question or statement. So Computers are only 99% of us being able to get help/answers about our trucks..!
