View Full Version : Pa folks anybody got an engine?
norville 06-15-2005, 12:02 PM Howdy neighbors,
I'm near 18707 Mountaintop/ wilkes-barre/ hazleton/ scranton area.
Anybody got a used 350 laying around? Running or complete. It would be great if it had TBI.
I pretty sure I don't want to go though the trouble of putting in a 305 and I'm not going to upgrade my 4.3 v6.
Just sending the word out.
thanks
bob
bchevy 06-16-2005, 03:05 PM Got one in the 84 that's coming apart, got a 4bbl on top though.

norville 06-16-2005, 05:28 PM Thanks bchevy,
I'm looking for something a little closer to me.

TP from Cntl PA 06-17-2005, 09:39 PM I have a 350 out of a '71 C-20...........Ran ok when pulled
Williamsport, PA
If interested send me a PM on here............
Tom's 68 conv 07-11-2005, 06:32 PM just pulled a 350 that was just broke in out of that blazer I got
really don't need it but I had to have it
bought it for 1000 and the motor was the reason why
I know that is alot but if you are interested - I would sell the motor for 800
since there is alot of other stuff that I will use on my truck
I also have a real nice shortblock for 350.00 - it only has 8,000 miles on it
I needed the heads but the guy didn't want to buy the whole motor
that one is a two piece rear main seal - old style
norville 07-11-2005, 06:44 PM Thanks for the offer, But I'm busted and in over my head with my drop.
I'll get back to you on the shortblock it's very tempting.

68haywagon 07-11-2005, 11:02 PM Hey Norville remeber....If you ever need an extra hand.....I'm only a few miles away! Well most of the time anyway :)

Tom's 68 conv 07-12-2005, 05:46 PM ya know what
I've got this 305 4barrel from an 85 chevy
ran real good when I pulled it
I know you want a 350
but a good one is gonna cost some loot
I'll give you the 305 - complete - for a hundred bucks
plus the y-pipe and I can probably come up with some more exhaust parts too like a good muffler and tail pipe all for that same hundred bucks
then once you do have the loot for a good 350 there won't be much to have to change around
if you are interested - let me know
norville 07-13-2005, 06:16 AM Tom here's my dilema, I have a 4.3 tbi in the truck now. I really love the tbi. Hate the v6. It has done me no ill but a truck needs an 8. Even though I get 16+ mpgs.
My engine with tbi headers and a couple other mods I figure it's putting out 180hps?? Starts every time rund around town great just got no balls.
My goal for a V8 was around 240+hps at the engine. I would gladly use a 305 if I knew I could get the power I want. I'd prefer with TBI. I guess I can run a 305 with carb until I get TBI for it. Most opinions were if your gunna do it, do it once and do it right.Thw info I got is: the 305 has about the same power as the v6. If I can be convinced the 305 can do better please convince me. I'd prefer the 305 to the 6. Just for the sound alone.
So currently I was going to get some gears. and hope that put me in the power range of the v6. And wait for and 8.
My biggest hurdle is time.. when I was in my 20's I'd think nothing of grabbing a buddy and swapping an engine. Our best time was 10 hrs start to finish. Now, I'm going to have to kidnap 68haywagon to help me :).
bob
norville 07-13-2005, 06:19 AM Tom how stong was that 305? That 4blr was it on an aftermarket intake? Ya think it has a cam?
The 350 from the blazer that was an 86 correct???
the short block how real nice? I'm tempted to grab it and in the spring slap on some heads and go..
bob
68haywagon 07-13-2005, 09:17 AM I'm willing to give a hand....I've helped with a few motor swaps before so I have some experience :hm: .
Just outta curiousity what gears do you have in that truck now? My dad's 93 has the 4.3 tbi and it's pretty snappy. I've out ran a few ricers when I drove it. Then again down in L-town I'm alot closer to sealevel. I'll have to dig up what rear is in his truck. It's all stock so maybe 3.73s? with a four speed auto.
It likes to do some nice toasty one wheel burnouts too  .
Mike
norville 07-13-2005, 09:50 AM Thanks for the offer.
I'm pretty sure it's got 3.08's Doing the calculations I think in OD @ 70mph it's like 1800-1900rpms. As long As I keep in in drive I'm OK but still no real snap.
Thats why I wanted to do the gear swap. Lot's of folks tell me the 4.3 is great and lot's of power. Not mine.
Please if you can figure what gears and rpm's and tiresize. That'll give me a good indication on what to choose. I'mn thikin' 3.73's
bob
68haywagon 07-13-2005, 12:23 PM Well the 93 is home today for the hitch install so I looked some things up. I was wrong...it has an open 3.08 rear. Its running LT235/75/15 tires all around so like 29" tires. No tach so I can't tell you rpm @70 but if I was to guess I would say probably around 1800-2000 in OD. After it hits about 100-110mph it feels like it hit a brick wall....probably cause its shaped like a brick won't go much faster. Around town though it will eat riced civics and crapaliers. Chiltons says 160hp@4000rpm 235ftlbs@2400rpm stock, and the truck is completely stock.
Mike
norville 07-13-2005, 12:32 PM Mike that's about the same setup as mine. It just falls on it's face on the highway in OD. Unless I doing 70+ trying to drive to I81 kills me huntin for a gear and dropping into second.
So what do you think???
305's aren't real bad on gas. I should be able to get 200+ ponies with headers and cam.
Or pick up the 350 and get a setup from a tbi --- heads and intake etc...
Or my last choice was run it untill it puked and then scramble for an engine. 120K miles on now...
bob
68haywagon 07-13-2005, 01:34 PM BIG BLOCK TBI :D :bo2: :exit:
According to Chilton's for an 89 tbi setup (I can't find specs in my 67-87 manual) the 305 is rated at 170hp/270tq and the 350 is 210hp/300tq. I would think with a good cam and decent flowing exhaust you should be able to pull over 200hp/ 300tq out of 305. You would probably pull better numbers with the 350 with the same mods. It's completely up to you with what you want to do. Personnally if I was gonna do it and I didn't need it imediately I would wait for the 350. But if a good deal exists elsewhere...well I dunno.
Mike
Tom's 68 conv 07-13-2005, 03:23 PM well the 350 out of the blazer is now spoken for - that is usually how it goes with them
the shortblock has about 8,000 miles on it - someone had efi heads but, someone needed those cause they had one that was cracked
and they didn't want the shortblock cause it was a two piece seal type and they had a standard trans
so they would have had to change the flywheel also
and there engine was in good shape anyway
and that is how I ended up with only the shortblock with such low milage
it is in very good shape and is painted chevy orange
the 305 is stock - and like a 305 it is probably a dog
it didn't smoke though and ran pretty strong with the 273 rear that was in the truck
norville 07-14-2005, 05:57 AM Tom, sorry for the runaround, but before I change my mind I'm gunna pass. I don't want to ,but I wont be thinking engine till at least this time next year. I hope!!! I don't really have a place to keep it and after my recent move no place to work on it.
Thanks for the offer.
bob
Tom's 68 conv 07-14-2005, 06:01 AM oh no runaround
that is fine
don't sweat it
GloryHound 07-14-2005, 07:47 AM You can get 240 HP out of a 305 pretty easy. Most of your horsepower comes from your heads anyway. Back when my Gramps used to be the pit manager for a sprint car in the early 70's he swore by using a 283 while every one else was using the 327 or 350's and they always finished well at the track.
