I found your log pretty confusing because it looks like McAfee and Norton are installed on the same computer. I can't tell if McAfee is only actually running an antispyware app or what. It's usually very bad to run two antivirus apps on one machine. As long as you're only running Norton AV *or* McAfee AV and not both, you're OK. If one is antivirus and the other is antispyware, you're fine.

There is one piece of spyware on the machine and it's disguised as an "antispyware" toolbar.

Close all internet explorer windows. Scan with HijackThis. Put a checkmark next to this line, then click the "FIX" button.

Will do, might be a few days till I get time enough to get back over there, and will try to talk dad into uninstalling one or the other on the antivirus apps, and will snag another log after reboot and log in to the net, I tried to fix the dern thing, it would look clean on reboot but the minute it connects to the net....

For the internet thing, there are two things to understand.

In the list, you'll see two prefixes: BHO and Toolbar.

A BHO is a browser helper object (hence the BHO). It runs each time you start your browser. A Toolbar is effectively the same thing, but it runs with the browser or with Windows Explorer, if memory serves correct.

So, it makes sense that each time you open the browser, the connection is hijacked - the toolbar is disguised as a spyware blocker and it's actually the spyware :D

For the antivirus, Only uninstall if there are truly two separate antivirus scanning apps. See, Norton Internet Security and McAfee Security Center have kind of a "module" setup so you can enable and disable various components. The big thing to check: Just make sure he's not running two copies of antivirus.

Antivirus software is kinda like condoms - while it totally sounds like a great idea to double up on them in exceptionally risky/nasty circumstances, they actually work against each other and put you more at risk.

Only difference being - with double antivirus, you risk destroying your files and system instead of having viruses destroy them for you.
