First I power washed the block, then I used some oven cleaner, then Castrol Super Clean along with some (okay, lots of) scraping and brushing with an old toothbrush. Finished with lots of rinsing with Lacquer Thinner to get it ready for paint. Don't get the oven cleaner near the seals or anything aluminum. matthufham 08-02-2005, 10:35 AM choke/carb cleaner from auto-zone and a wire brush tomatocity 08-02-2005, 10:59 AM Agree with Yukon Jack though I also use Degreaser from Costco. Tough stuff and you might want to consider using rubber gloves. I run a hose from a hot water outlet to help with the really greasy stuff. In the final stage you can use paint thinner in a paint gun or a high pressure sprayer. HuggerCST 08-02-2005, 12:21 PM Oven cleaner. ;) A couple of applications of good oven cleaner will save alot of scraping, and will even remove the old paint. xtremer-pxl 08-02-2005, 02:58 PM Oven cleaner. ;) A couple of applications of good oven cleaner will save alot of scraping, and will even remove the old paint. thats what I use..it works great. cheap stuff from walmart! chevyfarmer 08-02-2005, 03:19 PM If you know anyone that has a hot water power washer, it will save you some time. I hauled my 454 motor to a friend house that had one, and it turned out almost clean enough to paint. Good Luck. bowtie 08-02-2005, 03:42 PM I just bought a pressure washer (no hot water though) because I was tired of hauling everything to the car wash or golf course shop to clean the parts. The oven cleaner sounds like a good idea. :metal: |
