kelsfine69 09-24-2005, 05:36 PM I am installing a deck in my glovebox and returnig the am radio to the dash for a cleaner look. Thank God the PO did not cut the dash. Here are some pics. kelsfine69 09-24-2005, 05:45 PM I measured, then measured again, made a few templates from cardbord, took some measurments from the old box. I then made a prototype out of cheap tin and seen how that fit. Made small improvements then made a box from 1/16" flat aluminum. Test fit the box( have to install in 2 pieces to fit thru the hole). I them marked the hole for the radio and cut out. kelsfine69 09-24-2005, 05:48 PM Masked off the cage for the radio, then gave a light sanding. I went to Wal-mart and picked up a can of Granet spray paint( Black with Green specs) Alan Potter 09-25-2005, 08:38 AM Wow, that's slick!! If you market it let me know! 70GMCer 09-25-2005, 08:51 AM Was that a standard "Single Din Mount" you are using for the deck? Was wondering where you can buy the deck mounting and hardware.....that's a slick looking setup... corn 09-25-2005, 11:05 AM That is soooooo clean. I cant wait for the finished pics & where they will be for sale at...Again, NICE! FRENCHBLUE72 09-25-2005, 11:22 AM Very nice and looks pretty easy to make also..... I may just mount the radio in the glove box and not cut my dash... 70c10 09-25-2005, 11:35 AM kelsfine69- Nice work!. Here are the pics I found of my old setup. Mine was crude compared to yours but I used it for 2 years with no problems. My truck had the AC liner in it when I bought it so I used that design to my advantage. Yours will be much stronger since it's metal. Here is a pic of my tin cage I made and "L" brakets riveted to the cardboard and the ABS that hides them. 55chevy 09-25-2005, 11:39 AM Looks like a new product idea for the vendors, should it be metal, plastic or fiberglass? kelsfine69 09-25-2005, 12:28 PM Paint is good and dry, and as I said before it has to go in, in 2 pieces muddpile 09-25-2005, 12:45 PM Looks great man! Keeps the radio in decent arms reach and still maintains the stock look. kelsfine69 09-25-2005, 12:48 PM Slide the tunes in, install the trim, and the rest is wiring. There is enough room for the stereo not to hit the inside of the glovebox. I bought a deck with a remote but its hard to find a deck that works with a "frequency" not inferred like all new deck nowadays. They can remote some inferred "EYES" on some decks I've been told. So the glovebox has to be open to operate with the remote. Not a big deal just put in a good disk. Also my truck does not have A/C so I dont know if there wold be any clearance issues with a truck that does. Any feedback is greatly appreciated :metal: I dont know if this could/should be moved to the FAQ kevncar 09-25-2005, 01:03 PM Here's a link to a chevelle site that has some pretty good info about how to wire up a "infared eye" so you can close your glove box door and still use the remote. http://www.chevelles.com/techref/ftecref26.html 86swb 09-25-2005, 01:06 PM That is really a net idea. What would you charge to make up some templates? I have the stock am/fm in mine and would like to have a nice radio with disk in my glove box. Looks good. I also do not have air. How did you get the door to look like a mirror? Also, what would you charge to build one in two parts (as in third picture) with radio hole but unfished. In American dollars. kelsfine69 09-25-2005, 01:27 PM Maybe if I get enough feedback I might think about manufacturing them, :banghead: but right now its in the proto-type stage, I dont want to start promoting this product on this forum, because I like it here :hot: :josh: . I dont know what range this product should sell for?? any suggestions. Material alone is about $20 + time, and you would cut the hole location/ U Paint. Oh... and I had the glovebox chromed, went to a wrecker and found a clean straight one, that way I could keep my original one intact :gi: cheyenne10 09-25-2005, 01:37 PM Would something like that work with AC truck? 86swb 09-25-2005, 01:49 PM Maybe if I get enough feedback I might think about manufacturing them, :banghead: but right now its in the proto-type stage, I dont want to start promoting this product on this forum, because I like it here :hot: :josh: . A lot of guys do. You are not running a business but just making these up for board members and believe there are a lot of board members here. Even on the '73-'87 might be interested. The $20.00, is that American? No way could we tell you what you need to charge us. You would just have to figure your material and time + shipping. Shipping would depend on where you live unless you had a flat rate. Again, this is not your business for an income but doing us a favor by building these and selling to us. I really do not think you would have a problem doing this for members of the board only. Does anyone else think any different? CG 09-25-2005, 01:50 PM arent the ac hoses, lines, ducts, whatever they are called behind that bump out? btw it looks really nice...good job 69 Short Fleet 09-25-2005, 04:08 PM Great looking install! How did you get such clean lines on your bends with the metal? Did you use a small brake? I've designed (on graph paper) a design for my glovebox install a few years ago, I hope to start working on it pretty soon. Doug kelsfine69 09-25-2005, 10:57 PM Yes I used a metal brake. I have one at the shop. I think a a/c truck would have to be reversed, but then there is not much glovebox area  cornutz 09-25-2005, 11:02 PM I would take one... I dont have access to any type of brakes so I would really appreciate one of these cool mods!!! Put me in line if you decide to make them for board members! I like the idea and your design A LOT!!! NutZ 53burb 09-26-2005, 02:01 AM I would be interested as well. It definately looks nice!!!! camaro__thunder 09-26-2005, 02:57 AM I will/would take one also ! 86swb 09-26-2005, 07:55 AM See, there you go. You can help us out and make a few $$ doing it. As I said "It is OK to help board members out and build these for them" They just do not want a business to join our board and start using this board to sell their products. But remember, I think I am first in line. ;) sleepyboy 09-26-2005, 08:52 AM looks purr t. With my vintage air install, the depth of the actual holding part of the box would need to be way less. bc gman 09-26-2005, 12:27 PM I also would buy one if you ever think of selling it. I do not have access to a break and have done very little metal work. Putter 09-26-2005, 02:54 PM Someone correct me if I am wrong, but for a while Sony head-units had an optional "wired" remote that was basically a little pod-like stem. Using one like that would do away with the need for the open glovebox door. That is some kind of awesome!! EDIT: Here is the remote I was talking about: knsmodels 09-26-2005, 03:03 PM Hey you might want to check out http://www.customautosound.com and click on Hidden audio....they sell a setup that comes with radio frequency remote that works anywhere....remote will work 40ft. from your vehicle and you can hide everything wherever you want....the only downer is no cd player that would have to be figured in seperate.....Paul 86swb 09-28-2005, 08:24 AM ttt tomatocity 09-29-2005, 12:45 AM Hey you might want to check out http://www.customautosound.com and click on Hidden audio....they sell a setup that comes with radio frequency remote that works anywhere....remote will work 40ft. from your vehicle and you can hide everything wherever you want....the only downer is no cd player that would have to be figured in seperate.....Paul I figure the CD Player being additional as a plus. You can add it later or ask for it as a present from your loved ones. The RF Remote is killer and I believe you can get it for less with an IR Remote. This is a perfect stereo/cd player for a truck without the inside gas tank so it could be mounted behind the seat with the head (attached by a 12 foot cord) mounted behind your dash or in the glovebox. The RF remote would have no problem with this setup. truckdude239 09-29-2005, 10:23 AM nice dude if u deside to make them let us know i'll think about getting one i really don't want to cut the dash lol 86swb 09-29-2005, 11:07 AM He is going to make them. He just has to figure his cost, what he needs to charge for his time and labor. These will be coming but just may be a little while so better get your name in line. First come first served. That is the fair was of doing this. He is only making them for board members. I talked to him and he will be getting back with price later. But as I said, "He will be making these". Do you all think $60.00 plus the ride to be a fair price? I do. What do you guys think? You cut your own hole and paint. He does everthing else. His cost for just the parts is $20.00. fade94 09-29-2005, 12:20 PM Also in line for one. :metal: 86swb 09-29-2005, 07:25 PM ttt 53burb 09-29-2005, 07:57 PM I put myself in line earlier. Will these work with a Vintage Air A/C unit??? Anybody know??? muddyole 69 09-29-2005, 08:04 PM sign me up for one those kick but over the lame idea I had just let me know Mike 86swb 09-29-2005, 08:37 PM I put myself in line earlier. Will these work with a Vintage Air A/C unit??? Anybody know??? 53BURB, send kelsfine69 a PM and ask him. He might have to make some changes. He is sending me the first one he makes and I will let everone know what I think of the quality. But I already know I will love it. I now have a stock OE am/fm restored radio in Burb now and this will also give me the old and the new. Do not want to tear up my dash. This way here you can have both. I love the idea. llegos 09-29-2005, 08:46 PM that is CLEAN!!! you wanna build me a setup like that?lol kelsfine69 09-29-2005, 11:58 PM Well..... I can officially say it is done. Thanks for all the feedback and here is the final pic. :metal: 86swb 09-30-2005, 12:12 AM Did you take the picture at night? Kinda dark. 86swb 09-30-2005, 10:29 AM Money order is in the mail for mine. PM me when you ship. tomatocity 09-30-2005, 01:44 PM Yes I used a metal brake. I have one at the shop. I think a a/c truck would have to be reversed, but then there is not much glovebox area  Excellent craftmanship. I am interested in one for an A/C truck. Is there anyone in your area that has an A/C truck that you can design one for? Now that you said there would be not much golvebox area for an A/C truck, here is another idea, 'underseat storage' or a 'console with a storage area'. I am up for any of these since I don't necessarily use the center of the bench seat for a third person. You can add me to your list of members that want the hidden stereo glovebox conversion. 86swb 09-30-2005, 10:38 PM ttt 69TowRig 09-30-2005, 11:26 PM That's sweet, will need some extra work to get a glovebox light in there though. Could almost redo it with an extra shelf above the DIN opening so you can keep the stock glovebox light and have more room in there. Of course then it would take even more time and material to make... smbrouss70 10-01-2005, 03:51 AM looks nice! 86swb 10-01-2005, 07:22 PM If you would like to keep your OE radio and want cd and more, and todays sound then this is the way to go. Do not cut that dash. 86swb 10-08-2005, 11:28 AM ttt 72wascal 10-08-2005, 07:41 PM I would also take one, but would have to modify for the Vintage Air install. But that is real cool. Maybe you could offer it in a two part mod, with a shorter box area for AC trucks. Or just offer templates to board members. Hat's off to you! :gi: gator2511 10-08-2005, 10:45 PM kelsfine69, Here are the photos of my Vintage Air glovebox. I tried to PM them to you but I guess it didn't work. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b283/gator2511/100-0024_IMG.jpg http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b283/gator2511/100-0025_IMG.jpg http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b283/gator2511/100-0026_IMG.jpg http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b283/gator2511/100-0027_IMG.jpg 72orangepumpkin 10-09-2005, 12:21 AM  Put me in line for one too, if you start making some! That is Sooooo Sweet! Not to mention the metal beats the heck out of cardboard replacements. :four: kelsfine69 10-12-2005, 08:36 PM OK here's the first A/C glove box radio. I kept the deck low for clearance but I'm sure you could move it up or center it if you want to. This will work with GM factory A/C, but not sure if it will work with Vintage air. I'm waiting for measurements from another board member. So I thought I would share my progress. :metal: 86swb 10-22-2005, 07:49 AM Got mine yesterday. Now I need to get a new radio to put in it. I wonder if the remote would work somehow with the door closed? That would be nice. I am also planning on adding a cd changer under the rear seat in the future so will need to get a radio that has a hook up for that. Will take pictures as I go. But right now I have a daughter getting married and that means $$$$$. I love this because I wanted to keep my OE radio with am/fm and did not want to cut up the dash and now I can have both.:c2: 86swb 10-22-2005, 08:07 AM Here is a picture of the one I received and it included instructions. 76bonanza 10-22-2005, 08:48 AM How do you get in line for one of these? No ac, looks slick love it. truckdude239 10-22-2005, 09:54 AM i iwshied i had remenbered about these before i cut my dash now i musty go and beat my slef up bbl see ten 10-22-2005, 11:23 AM Someone correct me if I am wrong, but for a while Sony head-units had an optional "wired" remote that was basically a little pod-like stem. I have the remote mounted to the side of the stering column with a magnet. I can do anything aside from change a disc with the remote. 86swb 10-22-2005, 02:34 PM How do you get in line for one of these? No ac, looks slick love it. You just did. I just got mine and have just cut the hole out for radio. He does a great job building these. Great workmanship. But as I said, have a daughter getting married and have to pay for that so will have to wait just a little while before I buy a new radio w/remote. I will be getting one so I can hook up a CD changer later. I am very happy with mine!!:) 76bonanza 10-22-2005, 04:33 PM Any idea how long before he will be making them? 86swb 10-22-2005, 04:45 PM No, but your best bet is to send him a PM. 86swb 10-23-2005, 10:38 AM Well here are a few up date pictures to show where I am at now. The first is where I marked for cutting the hole. The second is where I cut out the hole the third is where I test fitted an old radio I had laying around and the last is after I sanded and primered it. Next will be painting then will stop till after my daughter gets married and I can come up with money to buy a new radio. But I will take pictures of this in the Suburban. This thing is so cool. Striker169 10-23-2005, 01:50 PM wow thats really sweet if you make one for AC trucks let me know! corn 10-23-2005, 02:13 PM How much money for the AC model? Thanks... tomatocity 10-24-2005, 01:06 AM How much money for the AC model? Thanks... I talked to Kel in late September and he said he was looking into the glovebox radio for an AC cab but was pushed for time. I am looking forward to getting one then like most everyone else I will need to get a new remote stereo and speakers. Did anyone find out who makes the kick panel speakers and what they cost? mr.wilson 11-01-2005, 10:49 AM how much for one shipped to Dallas Texas? 86swb 11-01-2005, 11:12 AM I guess I forgot to post the picture of the glovebox radio after I painted it. I did not paint the color in first post. You can only get that paint in Cananda. I painted mine RUST-OLEUM "HAMMERED BLACK" which give the finish a hammered finish. Will finish later. All is needed now is the new radio w/remote, install and hook up. Sorry, the picture did not turn out great. It is a nice finish. 86swb 11-02-2005, 02:24 PM OK, here are some more pictures. Showing installed and ready for radio and and an OE 8 track player that I got in the OE box, never hooked up and brand new. This 8 track was built in '73. Now all I need is the new CD Radio w/remote, some new speakers and boxes and have everthing hooked up by someone who knows what they are doing and that is not me. But will have to wait till I get some more $$$. Weddings are expensive. But this is the last one. My other two girls are already married with their own kids. This is really a nice set up for you guys and gals who wants to keep their OE radio and do not want to chop up your dash.:) 86swb 11-02-2005, 02:36 PM Oh yel, as you can see, my gages are missing. Randy is decking it out for me with all new LED Blue Bulbs, new lense, white overlays and let me tell you, Randy really knows what he is doing with the '67-'72 gages. Will be getting mine back soon and will post pictures showing his workmanship. You get your moneys worth and more. My Burb will be also in shows and I really wanted a show car job and Krue is the man for the job. Randy is one nice guy too. He will treat you right.;) Take if from an ol' fart who has been around. Excuse the french. srv8800 11-14-2005, 09:08 PM i gotta have one. pm sent. 86swb 11-15-2005, 07:52 AM Here is a couple of pictures my cluster after I got it back from byrd. Lemield 11-21-2005, 10:04 AM PM sent to Kelsfine69. 86swb 11-21-2005, 11:32 AM When you reinstall the cluster, it is best to drop the steering colum down for clearance. The cluster will go in a lot easier and with no damage. This is really important if you have the tach as I do. bc gman 11-21-2005, 12:48 PM Kelsfine had sent me a pm saying that he would not be able to do any for a few weeks as he had a family emergency. I am looking forward to getting one so I can listen to cd's. srv8800 11-21-2005, 02:57 PM oh, i didn't know that. whenever that's taken care of put me in line for one. i have a question for anybody who's installed one of these. how does the head unit mount? thanks alot Green Machine 11-21-2005, 08:09 PM I would take one of those also if you decide to keep making them 70c10 11-21-2005, 08:52 PM 86swb- your white cluster looks great!. I think I'm going to do the same with mine. |
