So I dont have an in cab gas tank, and was thinking of building a box for two 6x9's and a 8in sub that looks and is similar to the same measurements as the gas tank. Has anyone done this before or something similar? and if you have a nice sound system in your truck could you post pictures.

might I suggest getting an 8 inch cerwin vega and building the sub box the whole length of the cab and porting it then putting ur 6x9's under the seat that little 8 in a box that size ported should be plenty of boom to get out and sand if u had ur truck sandblasted haha

heres my suggestion... put a pioneer premier thin series 12 in the middle of the box taking up about 3/4 of the box... seal the sub up.... so make the box have 3 chambers...and put the 6x9's on the outside maybe more toward the corners of the cab face them out a little bit maybe... maybe put some ports by the sub like shown...

I agree... only way you would want to put anything other than a sub behind the seat is if it is facing up some how. I had an old truck box that was an 8 facing front and a 4' facing up and it sounded pretty good.

I had 2 10" kickers behing the seat and 6x9's in the doors, sounded great, I dont think you will hear the mids and high if you put the 6x9's behind the seat, the sub will be a little more over powering than the 6x9.

brad juan is right - highs and mids reflect - low end bass is non-directional. If you put something in front of a midrange or tweeter, will muffle the sound. It's almost impossible to muffle bass.

How would one 10 ported and componets behind the seat, 6.5" door speakers, and the tweeters from the components in the dash sound? I listen to alot of rock so I dont want booming bass, I want something thats loud with nice highs and can go with a fast beat.

Ported enclosures are great for hitting low, low lows (depends on how the box is tuned). Ported boxes are finicky, unless you understand how to tune a port, build a ported box, port length and all that other stuff, I'd go sealed - it's all around easier.

I don't understand why you'd want to split the components the way you're talking about doing it. You're talking about a lot of weirdness on the wiring and stuff - if you put the components in the box, you'll need to install the crossover that comes with them somewhere...and you're gonna be running a lot of wire to join that crossover with the tweeters in the dash...

If you wanted a prime setup and you insisted on using something like you're talking about, I would go with the 10" sub in the rear, sealed box, if you must have something for mid-bass, drop some 6.5" woofers in the rear along with the 10" sub (in separate sealed enclosures or something). Get some kick panels for your components to mount them next to your feet and drop some tweeters in the dash if you really want some highs or go with a single center channel in the stock speaker location. It all depends on your budget.

If given the choice between using a coaxial or triaxial speaker or a set of components, I would pick the components hands down every time. I am very concious of having too many speakers too :)

Always remember - you can tweak down or up the bass using the gain control on your amplifier...so don't let "too much bass" influence your choice. With some tuning, you'll get what you want - nothing sounds perfect right off the bat.

So do you think one 10 sealed with about 250 watts going to it would be enough to fill the cab of a truck. Or would 2 10's be better?

I'm going to be running a pair of Eclipse 4 way 6x9's in the doors off a 50x2 amp. They had kind of harsh mids and highs, so they will work good in the lower door with the distance to my ears. I will also be running a downfiring alpine Type R 10" in a custom center console off 350 watts. Should be pretty loud, and still sound great. 250 to a single 10" would sound fine as well Bowtieman.

i have already done it twice 2 10" alpine type R's and 1000 watt alpine amp seald and it hits hard.......jerald

thats mine, I tried to draw it out on paint just now, i didnt really have plannes laid out before hand but luckily my trucks torn apart so i measured the box, i know its confusing but ask anything u want

One ten should suffice, IMO.

I had one dual-voicecoil 12" in my extended cab '03 sierra with a 500-watt amp hooked up to it (tuned way down) and it kicked serious ass. Felt like a sledgehammer behind my seat (it was under the rear seat - a JL Audio stealthbox)

longlow72 thanks for posting those pictures. those help alot man. What kind of board should I use. MDF? What thickness?

I was planning on using MDF I dono about thickness though... any imput guys?

I usually used 3/4" MDF, although 5/8" would work as well. 1/2" could, provided there aren't a lot of big flat surfaces and it were braced properly.

Hey do you have any more shots of yours 70short and could you post the demisions or something on that picture or a diagram or anything? that is mroe what I am going for but with only 1 sub and 2 speakers.

its 1/2" mdf, those are generally shallow subs that are supposed to sound good in smaller boxes, its alot of trial and error. good luck and i can try to answer any questions you might have. oh and the only thing i had to remove was the wire thing goin across under the seat that pulls in and out the pin that holds the seat track in the position its in, you can stll adjust the seat but it takes 2 people

My wire is allready gone since I got two boxs with 6x9's in them. Does the seat hit the sub at all? My subs are 5 1/4" deep so those should fit shouldn't they?

Edit: I just looked at your plans again and and noticed its only 5 in. tall from that little notch up. I wonder if I could make it any taller and still not hit the seat. I'll have to go measure it soon.

Hey longnlow72, sorry to ressurect a thread from the dead but can you tell me what size those subs are? Are they JL 8W3's? I have to pull my cab apart to do some repairs and fit some new carpet etc so I want to add a sub, amp and some component speakers in the doors to replace the current JBL 6x9's in the back end of the door as they don't sound great firing straight into the seats.
