Could someone tell me what code or option tells me what gears I have? I've looked all over the internet and can't find anything. Thanks.

Take a look at the RPO sticker (Service Parts Identification) in your glovebox and see if you have one of the following codes:

G80: Locking, Rear Axle
GH0: 3.54:1 Rear Axle Ratio
GT4: 3.73:1 Rear Axle Ratio
GT5: 4.10:1 Rear Axle Ratio
GTY: Wide Track Rear Axle
GU4: 3.08:1 Rear Axle Ratio
GU6: 3.42:1 Rear Axle Ratio
HC4: 4.65:1 Rear Axle Ratio

What source did you get that from? I'd like to look up my other codes.

I purchased a '00 Tahoe a couple months ago and wanted to know what options it had on it, so emailed Chevy (cac@chevrolet.com) my VIN and they emailed me back a list of what all the option codes mean on my Tahoe. There were a bunch of options listed on the sticker in my glove box that weren't in the list they sent me so I started searching around on the internet using Google. To find the list I posted above, I used the following words in my search:

RPO GU6 3.42 3.73

Could it be the option where the suspension senses the weight of cargo and adjusts the brakes accordingly? I don't have any idea.

just call your local gm store and give the parts dept your vin and they will give all the info you ask for

The written identification works as long as no one switched the rear or ring and pinion somewhere along the way.

Try this If you really want to have an idea as to what kind of gearing you have. Put the truck in neutral then get it in the air. Spin a rear tire exactly one revolution while counting how many times the driveshaft spins. I read it and tried it on my 88 Mustang. It worked. I got 2 and 3/4 turns out of the drive shaft. Ford offers a 2.73 rear so I know what was in it. The metal identification tag also read 2.73. In went the 3.55's. Tested the theory of one tire turn and it worked again. I got 3 and a half turns out of the driveshaft.

Go to any dealer's parts counter and have them run the VIN number, they will print out what the vehicle came with, as well as where it was built, and on what date.
