View Full Version : painting flames?
Blue_71 07-17-2002, 11:04 PM how do you "fade" the colors together? i want to do some white into yellow flames, and i can never get the colors to fade, its always a blunt change when i do it.. wanna make a free (to me) trip to KY to paint some flames anyone?
cali_surfer 07-17-2002, 11:12 PM You have to use a detail gun if the flames are bigger, or an airbrush, get a nice transition from one color to the next. The very first set I shot I tried to fade the two colors with my normal paint gun. It ended up exactly like how you explained, too harsh of a transition from one color to the other.
Randy70C-10 07-18-2002, 09:01 AM You'll probably think I'm crazy, but I use a full-size gun. I just crank up the pressure to 100 psi, ajust the flow to a wide pattern, hold the gun back and lay it on! (this also requires that you down at least a six-pack first).
Randy70C-10 07-18-2002, 09:02 AM :D
Randy70C-10 07-18-2002, 09:05 AM :) I'm in the process of doing two more flame jobs as we speak. One is a green Harley with green flames, and overlapping pearl green flames. (it looks cool, honest) :)
Randy70C-10 07-18-2002, 09:08 AM In case you didn't catch this, here is a sportster I did. This tank will be a centerpiece for my livingroom soon because I bought a custom "stretched" tank to replace it.
KP1972 07-18-2002, 10:43 AM those flames on that tank are GORGEOUS, Randy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bill72BB 07-18-2002, 07:34 PM Randy ;
Nice job on the tank . I can't count the # of paint job on tanks i've washed down the gutter over the years.
I guess I'll have to drag my stuff to Virgina and let you have at it ..

Randy70C-10 07-19-2002, 04:36 PM Well Josh, only one way to find out. :D
Blue_71 07-19-2002, 04:39 PM lol, dont be surprised if you see a big bare metal 4x4 with 40 inch tires and loud pipes rolling in your drive one of thse days :D ill come just spend a week in that garage you built while you paint my truck ;)
PokeyJo 07-20-2002, 11:31 PM Hey Randy, if I bring my truck to virgin-a, will you paint flames on it for me? Pretty please:)
Randy70C-10 07-21-2002, 09:02 AM Only if we can get married. (no, not you Josh) Damn, just remembered that I'm already married. :D Besides, don't know what I'd do with SEVEN more kids!!
PokeyJo 07-21-2002, 10:18 AM I take it that means no:( . Guess I'll just have to try and do it myself. If it turns out lookin like crap, it's all your fault;)
Randy70C-10 07-21-2002, 01:54 PM Where do you live? I've got enough paint jobs lined up to keep me busy until next summer, just wondering if you're really serious. :)
PokeyJo 07-21-2002, 05:33 PM Randy, This is what I want my flames to look like. How hard would this be?
Randy70C-10 07-21-2002, 07:15 PM That's a nice looking truck! :) - check yer PM
outlaw69096 07-25-2002, 01:26 AM i was gonna say flames arent that hard, im only sixteen and i can do them, but mine are solid color. but hey i still get a lot of compliments on them!
oh by the way mine are on an 86 ford ltd wagon, dad got the car, i didnt have a choice, i just bought me a '69 chevy c-20 though, my next goal is to get it running. i guess 15 years of sitting in a field isnt good for a truck.
