I have a 67 GMC shortened and I would like to lower it soon. I have heard of flip kits for the rear leaf set up. Can anyone give me any info on these flip kits? What do they consist of and how labor intinsive is the install?

A flip kit will have a "U" plate to mount the axle on top of the leaf springs and most of the time they'll come with new u-bolts.

The install is pretty easy. <simplified instructions> Just support the truck by the frame, take off the wheels, support the rearend, remove the leaf springs, install flip plate, reinstall leaves, etc.

A 73-87 kit can be made to work. Just need a little grinding done and it will work.

How much drop will I get in the rear with a flip kit? Will I have to "C" notch the frame?

Axel is about 3 1/2+the thick ness of you spring pack that's your drop. Depending on where that gets you you might want to notch it. I have 2 1/2-3" of travel and no notch with my leaf truck I dont mind the way it rides.

I think I have four springs with an overload. Did you remove any springs when you lowered?

I had them dearched 3"(sp) and a 2" drop shackle.(it will not clear a wood floor with out shaving the board) so if you have a wood floor go with 1.5 shackle.

I also removed the over load sprind that gave me 1" and this week I pulled the one with the clamp that holds the pack together that gave me a 1 1/4" now it sits nice.


In the end a axel flip would have been a better way to go. Just was not aware of the kits avaible and the simple mods that need to be made to get them to work out.

No, I was not aware of that. Give me some info on what to look for. I was thinking of 4-5 in the rear and 3 up front.
