View Full Version : Shifty - could use help again
Bowed 01-29-2006, 07:40 PM Hi shifty , my wife got a new computer and the first time she went on the web she caught something bad and the computer is almost dead in the water . I had loaded AVG and HJL and windows updates before she used it and the HJL showed at least 3 items in the log that said " redirect.com " . I used the fix button in HJL to delete them but the computer is still in the same condition . AVG finds nothing wrong . How do I get her out of this ? Her computer freezes has soon has it gets on line , so I can not post it's log or even E-mail the log to my computer . This is her first computer and she is already disappointed by the expierience . Thanks Shifty
.
shifty 01-29-2006, 10:00 PM Uh, man...If it's using Windows XP you shoulda had the built-in firewall on and first stop shoulda been to Windows Update! :D
Is it running Windows XP SP1, SP2 or no SP at all? You can find this out by going to the Control Panel and double-clicking the System icon. On the General tab it'll tell you what version you're running.
Whatever you got probably has disabled your Antivirus.
Windows XP has a "System restore" feature that can be helpful when used properly. Here's what you can do:
Unhook the computer from the internet.
Go to Start menu and choose Help.
Locate and click "Undo changes to your computer with System Restore".
On the supplied calendar, choose a date *before* you were infected with this nastiness.
This will restore your computer back to the setup it had on that date which *should* be spyware free.
Before you do anything else at all, go to another computer, download Windows SP2, burn it to CD and install it on the computer if it ain't on there already (link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en )
Turn on the Windows Firewall - it is found in the Control Panel as the Windows Firewall icon. Turn it on and allow "no exceptions" or whatever.
Give that a shot, let me know if it works out for you.

Shifty thanks for the quick reply . The built in fire wall was enabled and service pack 2 was installed before I turned the computer over to her . I thought at that point I had the bases covered . Both windows and AVG automatic updates are also active . I will do the system restore like you suggested and see what happens .
P.S. I installed netzero HI- SPEED the same day the trouble started but that can't be a cause ---right ???

shifty 01-30-2006, 12:03 AM Sorry man, I don't see anything wrong with that log. The "redirect" thingies in the R0 and R1 lines are normal - it's something that HP put on your computer before you bought it. They're also safe to "fix" all of them if you want to. Other than that, I would keep mosta what you got on there.
Bowed 01-30-2006, 01:44 AM OK and thanks for your time and interest . It seems to be running good since the restore .
.
shifty 01-30-2006, 10:41 AM Cool. In the meantime, I would reinstall AVG I guess and ... I would turn system restore off and back on again to nuke the remnants of whatever you got on there. system restore will keep backups of the computer in the screwed up state (you can roll back and forward with it).
Bowed 02-02-2006, 01:25 PM Shifty , that bit scan program you posted found and deleted the following on my wifes computer
d:\1386\system32\b4ndcvy.bat ----deleted
d:\system volume information\ - restore{a2578cba-012a-4ee9-9e3d--deleted
Thanks.
shifty 02-02-2006, 02:54 PM Wait - is this correct that it's d:\1386 and not d:\I386 ?
Just want to make sure.
Bowed 02-02-2006, 03:09 PM
Wait - is this correct that it's d:\1386 and not d:\I386 ?
Just want to make sure.[/QUOTE
Sorry , but I do not see a difference between the two .
*****EDIT**** If you are asking if it was large D and not small d I think it was large D.
.
shifty 02-02-2006, 03:22 PM No, I'm asking if it was a number one (1) or the capital letter "i" (I).
Bowed 02-02-2006, 03:48 PM
No, I'm asking if it was a number one (1) or the capital letter "i" (I).[/QUOTE
You have me there and if I did not see the difference between the two in your question I might have copied it wrong from the program . I don't know for sure but I thought it was a 1 (one) .
.
Bowed 02-08-2006, 09:26 PM If it was (I) instead of (1) is that a problem for her . Should I be checking something ? Thanks .
.
shifty 02-08-2006, 11:43 PM Yeah, it should be I (i capital) and not 1 (one). If it's not, it is a problem but I honestly don't know what.
