I have a 1997 gmc and the pitman arm is bad. I was looking at it and it looks like a pain to get off and there is not much room:confused: , Did anybody replace one and how hard is it?

I recently did mine and it didn't want to come off. Here is the advice given to me when I replaced it: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=179285 I ended up breaking two pitman arm pullers trying to get the arm off. What finally worked for me was cutting a slice out of the pitman arm with a cut-off wheel. See pic. Be very careful not to damage the splines. Making this cut relieved a lot of the tension on the shaft and allowed me to pull it out. I also used a propane torch to heat things up and get it to expand a little. bummy 02-03-2006, 12:39 AM thanks for the tips, ithought it was going to be a big job. i might just take this to the front end shop and let them do it. |
