Hey Guys!
I have a 98 1500 I just bought. Won't start on it's own, but will if I put gas into the throat, so I have concluded Fuel Pump. In the past, if a pump is bad, I rap the tank with a board, and with the ignition on, the pump will come on for a second or two, or sometimes, even stay running to go get a pack of cigs!
With this truck, the pump won't make a sound when I rap the tank. In checking prices for a new pump, Rockauto.com is suggesting to replace the wiring harness with a fuel pump.
Has anybody had an occassion where the harness was faulty, and not the fuel pump? These pumps are the three HUNDRED dolla ones, so I sure could stand a harness problem instead!!
Does anybody have a diagram of the tank wiring harness so I could check what voltages/resistances I should have??
Thanks,
Mike

Me Again!!!!!!!
Also, there is a guy on E-bay selling fuel pump repair kits for these pumps, for about 80 bucks! Anybody had experience with these or know how I can buy one locally?
Thanks

My only experience with the pump harness was a ground came loose from the harness and there was no completed circuit...no noise, no working pump....replaced the harness, back to normal.

That's exactly why I asked that question!!! Thank You! Usually, if you rap on the tank, the pump will kick on for a minute, and it's not on mine, so I was wondering if it could be a harness problem! I'll have to pull the tank down after this 40 days of rain is over!
Thanks,
Mike

I have had experience with several aftermarket electrical parts. After just as many let downs, I have concluded it's not worth the savings on the initial purchase. Stick with OEM in most cases.

Assuming you have checked for fuel pressure up front, then check for voltage at the plug nearest the pump. Obviously if you have voltage and no pressure, the pump is indeed the problem.

A quick glance through the 98 manual shows the power for the 5.0 and 5.7 on the grey wire and ground on the black wire.
