Before I mention anything, I want to point out that Norton GoBack is installed on this computer. This suggests two things: First, any changes you make are going to be /can be restored to the computer, which is not something you want, so disable it before proceeding with changes and re-enable later. Second, it also suggests that there is probably an undelete feature on the computer...so when you delete files, they actually stay on your computer. I had a guy last year that deleted 20GB of data off his drive and was freaking out because nothing was in the recycle bin, but it still showed that he had 200MB of free space left...he couldn't figure it out - well, Norton was caching the files, there is some special way to dump the files so ... just a heads-up.

Next in line ... she has several trojans on her machine and some are nasty/hard to get rid of.

At first glance, I see she has CoolWebSearch/AdClicker downloader on her computer, which is nasty and probably generating popups. This is noted by "winbas12.exe" running in the background. Kill this process and run this tool: http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/ - once it's complete, delete this file: C:\program files\winbas12.exe

There is an unknown Trojan on her computer. This is running out of this folder: C:\Program Files\Hlpsb\ and it goes by the name of Mavqc.exe. You should rename this file, reboot the computer and then delete it.

She has the ultra-infamous super-hard-to-get-rid-of VX2 or Winfixer or Vundo trojan. This thing is a **BEAR** to fix. I'm going to layout a plan for recovery for you. Gimme about 30 minutes.

A recent forum member privately contacted me about the VX2 trojan your aunt has - he is very computer literate and had no idea how in the hell to fix it. I gave him this info and it worked:

Download and run this tool from one of the following two links:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Instructions:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

As for items that will need to be fixed to kill popups and crap like that she has to be seeing right now, fix the items in red with Hijackthis if you see them after doing the cleanup given above. Items in blue are optional items to remove that will speed up booting of the computer - DO NOT attempt to remove these until you complete the steps above. Be sure to close all open programs before making these changes :)

I want to address one other issue - it looks like her Windows Update might be stuck in an "update loop". Be sure to click the little update icon in the taskbar, update, reboot and make sure that little bastard goes away. If not, I might be able to help.

Once we finish this, it is important to turn System Restore off, then back on again to flush all of the crap above out of the system.

Last but not least, please give me another hijackthis log once you cleanup!

Ok, good job, she's clean. Guess it's easy to remove that VX2 now if you know what the hell to use.

You will want to delete these directories and files if they're left:

Directories:
C:\Program Files\ProSiteFinder\ProSiteFinder
C:\Program Files\Hlpsb\

Files:
C:\Program Files\winbas12.exe
C:\WINDOWS\vehev.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lv6g2cvv.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljjh.dll

It may be necessary to go into the Tools menu and Folder Options and "show all system files" and whatnot to see some of those files.

Again - it's important to disable/re-enable System Restore after killing those files nad doing the work we've done so that you flush all of the removed system files.

It is equally important to ditch any rollback points that Norton GoBack might have setup AND to remove any deleted files it's saving/caching.

If you have any further problems please let me know. I'm happy to help.

thanks a million shifty.

When I turned off the norton roll back and restarted the computer. it took 2 1/2 hours for it to clean out the cache.

I still got a crap load of AOL programs I need to get rid of. AOL doesn't make it easy though. They seem to enjoy hiding everything.

Maybe tomorrow I'll be able to check the systemout again. I also told her to renew her anti-virus subscription since it expired 2 days ago.

Good luck. AOL is typically easy to remove using "Add/Remove programs" function in the control panel.

I still get a chuckle every now and then when people "remove a program" by deleting its folder on the computer :D My ex g/f used to do this. :D
