I had a locksmith tell me that the lock on the back hatch T-handle can not be keyed the same as the ignition and doors. At present I don't have a key that works but my ignition key will slide in. Do any of you have your hatches keyed the same as your doors?

I have heard of guys being able to use the ign. key for the back hatch.
Mine uses a separate key.
I've tried to have an extra one cut but nobody has this type of key.
Here are my 2 keys.
brass one is the one for the hatch.

My very original '72 uses the same key for the doors, ignition and rear hatch.

You can get the original hex-shaped blanks somewhere(somebody help me out here)that I`ve seen.Maybe with one of those it`s possible(don`t know why, though).

The original hex-shaped blanks pop up quite often in ebay, I've been looking for a complete set for a while that uses only one key for the for the whole shebang, door locks/ignition/glovebox/hatch, did they ever come like this from the factory? :)

Gary 70 Jimmy, can you post pic of your key, please. Is it the "hex" key? If not, can someone post the "hex" key. Can't really vissualize what that would look like. I have the square head key for the ignition, and was under the impression that the oval (round) head key would be for the doors/hatch. But since none of my locks work, I don't know. Thanks

I got 3 keys thanks to the previous owner.. One for the doors -one for the ing-and one for the rear hatch... All three keys are different I really need to fix that soon..

You can buy sets for the ignition, doors and glove box (I think Chevy Duty has the 3 piece set). Never seen anything related to the hatch lock in the catalogs.

I got my first blazer from the original owner back in 1980. I have owned 3 more they all worked off of one key. Back in the late 80's my hatch handle broke. I found one at a GM dealer over in Maryland. He ask me if I wanted to go a head and get the new locks for the doors and ign to match. I said no. What an idiot I was. My hatch is an orginial GM key same as door/ign.

First pic is of a key to a 68 I found in a salvage yard.

Second pic is the key that came with my 68 and the gold color ones are from a local mom and pop hardware store thats been around for quite some time.

Holy schmoly, so those are hex keys. Now that I see it, I may have found one of those in my Jimmy when I first bought it, but I didn't know what it was for. Doesn't matter since it didn't have the hatch. Sure hope I saved that key somewhere.

if I'm not mistaken 68 was the last year for the hex key. 69-72 were the square ones.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong

My 1 key works on all 3. At first the key would fit into the hatch lock but would not turn. After a little lube and some compressed air it worked. I intended on tearing it apart and cleaning it correctly at some point, but at least it works now. Have you taken it apart and worked on it at all yet? I thought I was going to have a key made but thanks to someother board members it works.

I have had 4 Blazers over the years and one key did the doors, ign, and hatch, but with theses being 30+ years old and hatches being fragile, it makes complete sense that the hatch has been changed out and the handle never swapped. As for the locksmith saying it can't be keyed to the ign key, you might want to find a more "knowledgeable" locksmith. I had a 67-68 key and the ign was jacked but I kept the key!

Since my key fits, since I know the previous owner never used the hardtop in the 15 years he owned the blazer and since many boardmembers have indicated there is a chance it is keyed the same, I am going to give the lock more cleaning and lubing attention. If need be I will find another locksmith.

Thanks everyone.

If you are going to take it off the hatch. Submerge it in something and let it soak. I have a beautiful hatch handle that I got. No key. Took it to an old locksmith it was seized up beyond repair. He explained to me that these locks are keyed the same but the components are very different. My master plan was to buy 2 sets of matching door/ign locks and have the guts of one put into the handle. He said won't work. Also explained that the lock assembly comes in through the back of the handle so not easy to get out. Right now I am still looking of a handle with a key.
