please provide motherboard model number. i can't tell you a damn thing unless you tell me what you got first :D
this is the most common thing that people leave out when asking for help :)

So, can you give me a list of things you've tested the sound with - when are you getting sound and when do you not?

I wish I could sit in front of it - some of the sound software that comes with your computer can be confusing - some will have an "effects" section or whatever so you can turn on diff't effects. It's almost sounding like that's what's up with yours.

okay i got someone coming over to help i'll keep you posted
I could be wrong here but i have 2 computers with both asus motherboards in them and the cds they send dont come with the most up to date drivers with the package as they cant keep up i guess.
If it were me id try to see if thats your problem go to dfi's site and see if the drivers have been updated since the release of that cd they sent you.
Hope this helps

That was the next question i was going to ask - but the thing that didn't make sense was the thing working in WMP. you should be plugged into the green jack or the black one (depends, but those are universally "line out". I didn't want to insult you by asking what you were plugged into :(
