How do you turn off the thing where if you goto save a file and it brings up a list of things that you have already saved or just comes up with names? Kind of like in IE when you type in an address and it list the sites that you have been to starting with the letter you type first?
Maybe in control panel

I don't know of anyway to turn that off, just one of those things that you learn to live with. Shifty may know some trick since he plays with it more than me, but I have not heard of a way to disable that.

I had been able to disable it before long ago. But how I did it I have no clue. Its just one of those "helpful" features that I find more of a hindrance. If I somehow get it disabled I will post how I did it for anyone else that doesnt want it.

Now that I think about it I believe you were right. You could do that with Windows 95/98 but it wasn't available with Windows NT and all the NT based OSs that followed (2000/XP). It's been a while since I did a whole lot with Windows 95/98. Seems like centuries ago. I guess that means I am offically an old tard. :D

I'm not using IE 6 anymore so I'm not sure :D
To disable autocomplete from showing a dropdown list in WinXP IE address bar, go to tools, internet options, then content(4th tab), click autocomplete button, uncheck web addresses, then clear history. I'd also suggest along with this to go to start, right click start, left click properties, change to classic view, then click customize, then click the clear button. I think this should do the trick.

I will try that. So is auto complete incorporated with xp? When I goto save a file like say a text file in word pad. I go to type the file name I want. Say I type a then it will autotext and highlight apples.txt. That is mainly what I'm not wanting.
But I do thank everyone.
Shifty I really appreciate your help, you have helped me out a lot. Feel bad about not being able to contribute back something for you in some way.

Auto Complete is a feature that was rolled into IE versions 6.0 and higher, but I think it's also something that is "native" to Windows 2000 and XP. You gotta realize that Internet Explorer is fully integrated into Windows (grafted in) so the file browsing utility (used in the "save as" windows) is probably using the Autocomplete feature also. Try turning off what I said and see if it fixes it - if not, I think I might have another suggestion.
Don't worry about not contributing back, man. It takes me 1 minute to give you a suggestion where you'd run around lookin for 1 week. It'd be stupid of me not to offer help :) Maybe someday I'll need a hand with something I don't know about ... you never know. If you can't return the favor to me directly, return the favor to someone who deserves a hand with something you're good at. Good deeds and helping others begets more good deeds and more people helping others.

It looks like if you disable Inline Autocomplete in IE, it also disables the autocomplete when typing in a filename in a "Save As" window.
