Mudder 02-13-2006, 11:13 AM I keep getting a Nortons warning for security for this
C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe
It asks me to permit or block. I'm sick of it. Ususally pops up a couple times an hour.

whitesswj 02-13-2006, 01:21 PM you'll need it, so allow it.
Mudder 02-13-2006, 01:25 PM But how can I get Nortons to quit bringing it up?
whitesswj 02-13-2006, 06:33 PM what's sad about all of this is the fact that more than one is running in the back ground and as soon as you manualy close one, another comes up. That's a good one for shifty to help with. IMO I'd uninstall norton and delete it. I can't stand it. Install AVG Free and Spybot S&D and adaware and you're "good to go"
sswj
Palf70Step 02-13-2006, 10:07 PM I have not used Norton Security/firewall for years, but there should be a setting for it to remember and quit asking you.
On the side note, you can do much better with something other than norton. AVG for AV and either Sygate Personal Firewall/Zone Alarm and Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta...all are free. I like the Sygate Firewall over Zone Alarm, but that's just my preference.
mister honey 02-13-2006, 10:28 PM Yeah...I just dumped Norton firewall & anti-virus, too. Tired of the frequent popup alerts when the firewall was disabled. Now I'm running NOD32 and Kerio firewall. Thanks shifty and everyone else!
Mike
Bowed 02-13-2006, 10:31 PM There are a couple of items in the log that look wrong like ---
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {77701e16-9bfe-4b63-a5b4-7bd156758a37} - (no file)
AND
O18 - Protocol: msnim - {828030A1-22C1-4009-854F-8E305202313F} - "C:\PROGRA~1\MSNMES~1\msgrapp.dll" (file missing )
.
shifty 02-14-2006, 02:21 PM sorry, I was in Miami with my g/f and her dad and stepmom all weekend. Been gone since Thursday
I had to completely remove Norton Internet Security from my girlfriend's Dad's machine this weekend because it was tearing his computer apart and slowing it to a screeching halt. I hate their non-antivirus products! NOD32 is a great pay solution for antivirus and Kerio Personal Firewall (by Sunbelt) is a free firewall solution that is wonderful and intuitive even for beginners (just read the manual if you got questions).
I want to say something: You have two firewalls running on your computer, which is generally not recommended - you have both Zone Alarm and Norton Personal Firewall (somehow tied to your antivirus). I would pick one and stick with it.
You have some spyware on your machine from a spyware company called "Acoona". This is possibly trying to "call home" and report your browsing habits to someone which is why this popup keeps returning! Good thing you have a software firewall or you mighta never known (I'm guessing this is the source of the popup).
The "protocol" line that Bowed lists above is OK. Leave it. the other is bad. Here is what I would do:
Open Hijackthis. "Scan only". Put a checkmark next to each of these lines:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.accoona.com/search_assist...paign=wdz0605a
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.accoona.com
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.accoona.com/search_assist...paign=wdz0605a
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://www.accoona.com/search?q=%s
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {77701e16-9bfe-4b63-a5b4-7bd156758a37} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: Accoona Search Assistant - {944864A5-3916-46E2-96A9-A2E84F3F1208} - C:\Program Files\Accoona\ASearchAssist.dll
O3 - Toolbar: Accoona - {364B6276-C6C1-40B6-A6D7-6C48871FD707} - C:\Program Files\Accoona\atoolbar.dll
Close all open programs, especially your Internet Explorer!
Click the "FIX" button in Hijackthis. Reboot. Scan again and make sure these items above did not return.
Report back about the firewall nagging. Is it still there?
Mudder 02-14-2006, 02:27 PM Thanks Shifty. I need to get a girlfriend so I can get away :) Workng on things now. The toolbar I had removed but i will do a scann and see what happens. Thanks.......
Mudder 02-14-2006, 03:08 PM Ok, one came back but I checked it again and havent check if it came back again. I have to go to work so I will see then let you know. Running late. Thanks.
Mudder 02-15-2006, 01:59 PM The Nortons nagging is still there. It says aomething about online gaming/intant messagin/etc type probes. I think I just gonna get some other anti virus and firewall. Is the free AVG any good?
shifty 02-15-2006, 04:19 PM Free AVG is a good package for the pricetag. Be sure to uninstall Norton completely, then reboot the computer before you install another antivirus application. If you want a free firewall, check out Kerio, it's here:
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm
So, is Norton firewall the thing giving you the annoying nag?
booth 02-23-2006, 10:21 PM Hey shifty,
Do you have any good Firewalls for some of us that are running Windows 98? Kerio wouldn't run on '98.
Thanks,
Paul
shifty 02-23-2006, 10:35 PM i am not familiar with a free firewall type software that will run on Win98. ZoneLabs has ZoneAlarm:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=dbtopnav_zass
Free download.
