REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\Userinit.exe But in this case, it may be legitimate, so I will say to leave it. Are you still seeing the shell extension for that site on the recycle bin? If so, I can give you a quick bit of help getting rid of that also - I wanted to make sure we got rid of any spyware that might have put it there first. magooster 02-16-2006, 11:08 AM Yes it's still there shifty 02-16-2006, 11:46 AM Okay...man, how do I explain how to fix this one? :D That thing is embedded in there as a "shell extension" or a "Special folder". This means that at some time, something porn-related was downloaded and installed on your computer and it basically wrote itself into Windows as a "right-click" option (aka "shell extension" or "special folder" which is a modification of Windows on a low level that adds extra functionality). Programs like Winzip do something similar, but they offer you an option *not* to have shell extensions added. Most "free" software does crap like this...heck, most pay software does it too ;) Okay, here's the deal. I can probably help you to hide it or delete it, but I can't tell you how to remove it the way I would remove it without telling you how to hack it out using the Registry Editor and I'm not comfortable with having you do that because you can nuke Windows. :D Download this program: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview_setup.exe Run the EXE, it will install on your computer a program called "ShellExView". This program will allow you to see ALL shell extensions that are setup on your computer currently and allows you to easily disable and enable each shell extension and/or "special folder" (which is what is plagueing you right now). Shell extensions and special folders can slow down your computer and ones that are not in use should be disabled or removed. Basically, after this program is installed, you will open it, it will show a list like what you see on this page (it also has instructions): http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html You should see that stupid "sexmaxx.com" galleries item as one of the listed entries. Click on it once to highlight it, then go into the File menu and select the appropriate add/remove option. This should get rid of it for you. I have never used this software, but it appears to be great. Browse through the list and look for other similar items to be sure there isn't more than one! If the problem is resolved afterwards, feel free to uninstall this software using Add/Remove programs in the Windows Control Panel. Please report back to me and let me know how it works out for you. magooster 02-16-2006, 06:00 PM Hey Shifty, again thanks for all your help on this. I didn't see it on the list after running ShellExView. shifty 02-16-2006, 06:40 PM Cool! So are you good to go now? I just want to make sure you're not saying you don't see it in the list! magooster 02-16-2006, 06:55 PM Oh sorry, I didn't see it on the ShellExView list. But it's still there when I right click the Recycle bin. shifty 02-16-2006, 09:42 PM Ok, do this... Click on the Start menu, choose "run". Type regedit into the box and click OK. This should open the registry editor. Don't do anything except what I tell you to do below :) Click on the Edit menu and choose 'Find'. Search for "sexmaxx". When you find a result (and you will), please take a picture of it in one of two ways: 1) Press the "Print Screen" button on your keyboard, then open MS Paint (it's in the start menu under 'Programs', then 'Accessories') and from the Edit menu in MS Paint choose "Paste". Then save it to JPEG format and find some way to post it so I can see it clearly. 2) Use a digital camera if you can't figure out #1. There may be multiple instances of "sexmaxx", so when it finds one result and you get a picture of it, please press the "F3" button on your keyboard to find the next result, if it exists and take a pic of that too. Once we find all of them, I will instruct you on how to manually remove them. This is the only other safe way I know to do this :( magooster 02-16-2006, 11:17 PM Ok shifty I found one in the Registry, then I saved it as a Jpeg like you said, but like an idiot I saved it as sexmaxx.jpg. So then when I pressed F3 a couple showed up under "MY PICTURES" I have subsequently renamed it and rebooted and it still shows up. I'm asuming those ones aren't a problem so here's the first one. magooster 02-16-2006, 11:19 PM Holy crap thats blurry. Let me know if that's unreadable and I will try again. shifty 02-17-2006, 01:18 PM Nope. I can read it just fine. I will point out one thing about the registry editor: You have two panes, a left one and a right one - The one in the left-hand side that has a bunch of folder looking thingies called "keys". When you highlight a "key" you can see all of its "values" - the values are in the right-hand side and look kinda like they could be files. You can seriously screw things up if you delete a string of keys, so we're going to delete a specific sub-key here. Do not delete any of the top level keys above this sub-key we're deleting. I need you to open the registry editor, same as before, do a "find" to get back to that place again. With the right-hand mouse button, right-click the ">>>> FREE PORN GALLERY" key (the folder looking thingy) and choose DELETE (example is below, but DO NOT delete the key I am showing in my example, delete the one I just told ya to! :D!). Once you've deleted it, reboot, test to see if you get that when right-clicking the Recycle Bin anymore, then come back in here and tell me if you successfully have ridded of it or not. If it doesn't, you probably want to try doing the "find" again. :) http://satellitehead.com/uploads/regedit.jpg magooster 02-17-2006, 08:01 PM Mission Accomplished!!! Thanks again Shifty, for walking me through that whole process. If it wasn't for you that thing would've stayed that way forever. I'd be too freaked out to delete anything in the registry on my own. shifty 02-19-2006, 04:19 PM you're welcome. i don't like telling people to hack the registry because of the potential damage, but it's really the most effective way to get things done. i've screwed up a couple of systems in my time (my own, thankfully) trying to tweak things via the registry. some of the registry cleaners that people use out there are sadly a quick and easy way to nuke your registry :) |
