I am getting ready to have my rally wheels blasted in a few weeks. I need some pointers on painting them. I will be using rattle can paint.

My question is

1) What kind of primer should I use.

2) What kind of paint should I use (enamel, lacquer, etc.)

Any kind of advise or pointers would be great.

Get you some etch primer made by SEM. You can buy this in a spray
can. It comes in either gray or black.

I used the Argent Silver Rally wheel rattle can piant from Eastwood on mine after cleaning em smooth

Make sure you do a thorough job blasting. Any rust in the seams will come back through.
Clean well with compressed air to get all the blast material out then wipe down with a paint prep solvent.
Use Etching Primer (yes it comes in spray cans), as a base for any other paint. It will make the other coats of paint stick better.
Each coat of paint needs to dry a bit before applying the next.

In my opinion, next time mine need done again, I'm getting them blasted and powder coated at a local powder coat shop. Really not that expensive to have them done.

:agree: with the SEM comment above - you may need to go to an autobody paint shop vs. a NAPA, et. al. but it's far better paint. Completely agree with a good etching primer followed by a good topcoat.

yes to get the good rattle can stuff you'll need to o to an autobody supply store// but i'd first check out the powdercoting route, i think you'll find that haveing the wheels blatred and powdercoated bottom line wouldn't be all that much more in the long run for a far superior product

My personal opinion would be to have the blaster prime them also. Most commercial blasting shops use some killer primer,industrial stuff that is just about bulletproof. Our local blaster charges only a couple of bucks to prime after blasting.Its best to get it done as soon as possible after blasting. if you are going to rattlecan them dont use cheap paint,spend the few extra $ to get some decent paint. the cheap 'dollar store' stuff is just too watered down to last very long in automotive applications.
