Airbrushes can range in price from $50-$500...and I own brushes in all the price ranges...so it really depends on what you consider expensive....

You can get a quality dual action airbrush from a reputable manufacturer for around $50...Paasche, or Badger make very good airbrushes and some of their lines are in this price range. Other companies offer more economical lines also..but it really depends on what you want to spend....I'd stay away from the considered "bargain" airbrushes like the ones you can find at Harbor Freight. Their poor construction will do more to hinder you then make it a learning experience.

Other considerations are, Do you already have an air compressor? You DO NOT need a compressor that is specific to airbrushing...If you have a source of compressed air, that can be regulated down to 20-40 P.S.I. , then you have a suitable air source....the most you'll have to do is get an adapter to fit the smaller airbrush hose into a coupling that will fit the compressor outlet.

Iwata is my brand of choice when it comes to airbrushes...within the past 3 years, they have started a line called the Revolution Series of airbrushes...These are geared more towards the student and beginner, but they are still a very nice brush. I think they fall in the vacinity of $70 or so....you can usually find these at Hobby Lobby chain stores or maybe even at a Michael's arts and crafts store..(if you have those in your area)

hope this helps some....if you need more help, feel free to ask........

let me know what you decide on going with before you buy. i can check to see if i can beat the price. check out asetusa.com, anestiwata.com, maybe iwata.com too. IMO start with an iwata. i'm just a beginner airbrusher, but i've always taken rigo's advice and went with iwata. now i sell iwata for a dupont store, and i probably own 10 iwata paintguns/airbrushes. never regretted buying any of them
