View Full Version : right click, save as question..
bigblock73 03-07-2006, 12:06 AM How does one go about disabling the ability for people to rightclick/save as your pictures to their hard drive or wherever?
I have some photos I want others to see (on my website), but don't want them copying them for their own personal use. I understand there are other ways to get the pics, but I want to try and prevent everybody from taking them and making them their own.
Thanks.
Captkaos 03-07-2006, 09:47 AM I all reality, there isn't really a way to do this since anyone can see your code. You can make it harder on them that use IE by doing the following:

HotRod71 03-07-2006, 09:49 AM What he said...LOL
You can turn off the ability to right click in your webpage but it is a Java script thing and if they use Firefox like I do and they go in and turn off Java then they can still right click and copy your picture. If the picture is yours then go in and add a copyright mark on it so that is shows in the lower corner of every pic. But then again they could just edit that out or crop the image.
Slonaker 03-07-2006, 09:57 AM You can't really make it impossible. If they can see it, they can copy it. As the Capt said, you can just make it a little harder.
I had considered putting a space on my site for other people's trucks like you do. I don't because the one time I put a pic of someone else's truck on my site, he inlined the photo on his site (instead of copying it to his site) and ate up my bandwidth instead of his.

I had that happen once. An online parts retailer used links to a couple of images I hosted on my truck site. Once I found them, I replaced the images he was linking to with xxx porn images on my webserver. They were up there for about a week

I seriously considered replacing the image with one that said "I STEAL BANDWIDTH," but I figured I better not since he was a mod on a board I frequented at the time. :)

Orange '71 GMC 03-07-2006, 04:33 PM Best way to do it IMO is just put a watermark on your pictures...or just text across it that can't easily be blurred out or removed.
It can still be done, but most aren't going to go through that trouble if they just want to share the picture.
bigblock73 03-07-2006, 06:07 PM Thanks for the help guys, appreciate it. Basically someone copied pictures off my site, pictures I worked HARD to get from GM, erased my site signature on it, and is posting them elsewhere.
While I guess I am not completely offended by this, it bugs me they went thru the effort to make them their own and are using them as their own.
A while back I did this myself a couple times, and didn't think much of it...until it was brought to my attention. I then realized it wasn't all that cool of me to do, and haven't done it ever since.
I put the photos up for others to view and enjoy, but I didn't think they would go thru the effort to erase my site watermarks and re-use them.
Am I being overly anal here, or what?

No, and I would say something to the offending party. Is it the one posted on my board? You are an moderator, remove the link... I will if you want me too. Heck, I will "mention" that you went to alot of work for us to get those (including donations) and it was illegal for him to copy them and remove your watermark.

Yeah Chris, that's the one. I wanted to ask someone here first to be sure I wasn't being too anal about it. Del is a cool guy, and I don't think he meant any harm. What he did is very similar to what I did myself a while back (except I didn't erase any watermarks or trademarks). I will probably let it slide, but will edit my website to hopefully prevent this from happening in the future. If you want to say something to him that would be cool, and I'd appreciate it.
