Hey Guys,
My check engine lite comes on after a few minutes of driving. The code flashes out to 32...EGR malfunction according to several web sites I have looked at...From experience any of you have had, do you suggest I run out and buy/install a new egr valve or is there something else I should try first??? Thanks...By the way, the truck doesn't seem to be running worse since the lite started coming on. But it does idle at higher rpms for longer time while cold...thanx in advance..

first thing i would check is any vacuum lines associated withe the EGR valve (if there are any) and secondly i would remove it to make sure any of the passages aren't gunked up with carbon, if so i would clean it out.
Easy test on the vehicle is to hook up a hand held vacumn pump to the egr valve and see if the diaphram is ok or not. If it is ruptured the valve has to be replaced. If the diaphram is ok then remove the valve and give it a good cleaning being careful not to get harsh cleaners on the diaphram itself. This test is done with the engine turned off by the way.

i changed ine out right away i got a egr for like $18. Then i changed it out.
There was a guy in shop that had problems with his and there was a vacumn one line was pluged. changed that out and it worked fine.

you could just use a piece of vacum line and bypass the solenoid and hook full time vacum to the egr with the engine idling you should see the valve open and the engine will get very rough may even die, if the valve doesnt open or just flutters around the same position I would just replace it with a new ac delco valve if it appears to open fully but doesnt seem to make much of a change in how the engine is running try cleaning out the intake ports.
also recomend calling the dealer to give them your egr valve part number to see if it has been updated.

My check engine light was on for 3 years giving me the same code. I just ignored it until I finally didn't pass emissions tests this spring. did the above tests, replaced egr valve and solenoid and no more light. BTW, the check engine light is a joke. It's like saying, check your house. "Honey, where are the scissors?" "Check the house. I think they're in there."
