View Full Version : Universal Harness Opinions
Frizzle Fry 03-09-2006, 07:15 PM I looking into a new universal chassis harness for my '61. I don't want or need to go with a stock replacement.
Painless seems a little spendy, but I'd pay if it's really worth double the others.
I don't need the firewall protrusion because I can run to the front components via the center hump/torque-tube cover.
So, my question is, are these all junk -> http://motors.search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&from=R10&mppfqy=21+circuit&catref=C6&satitle=21+circuit&sacat=6028%26catref%3DC6&bs=Search&fsop=1%26fsoo%3D1&coaction=compare&copagenum=1&coentrypage=search&fmmk=&fmmd=&fylo=&fyhi=&mppfQy=25+circuit&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D2&sadis=200&fpos=97124&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=
or are there any "budget" harnesses worth buying?
If you would recommend any of these or any others please post the link. Thanks!
rodnok1 03-09-2006, 08:20 PM I rewired my '64 and just reused the stock connectors. The wiring on these trucks is so simple that it was fairly easy. Wire, connectors and loom are cheap and I can run it where I want. You can get the specialty connectors at Napa. I need to change the fuse box since it is too small, I figure I'll get one from a newer vehicle that has a bunch of circuits. I replaced all the light sockets also and prob have $100 total in everything. I'm installing an underhood relay center this week for fan/fuel pump and circuit breakers.
Hart_Rod 03-09-2006, 09:29 PM Painless costs more for 2 reasons, 1) name brand and 2) I believe it comes with more stuff, headlight switch, dimmer switch, a bunch of electrical connectors and some other stuff I can't remember. I've done both and functionally not much difference. JMHO.

Both meaning what; Painless and stock, or Painless and another company? What do you guys think of EZ-Wiring or Its-A-Snap?
Russell 03-10-2006, 02:31 AM Wiring is wiring. Unless they are using cheap flimsy ATO boxes, or too light of wires, I can't imagine that one kit would be less functional than the other!

I've done all 3. Comes down to a matter of preference. Painless has the best instructions and tech support. It'sASnap has built in relays in the fuse panel (they were the first to use the mini-fuse also). EZ is what I would consider the "generic". Making the assumption that all materials are similar, if you don't need any tech support, go with the EZ.

ozzyracing 03-10-2006, 12:55 PM What about American Autowire?
Frizzle Fry 03-12-2006, 08:53 PM Spendy and similar in quality to painless from what I've read.

Mike we just bought a 21 circut all black wiring harness from ez wiring for my dads 65 and its awesome!:metal:
Frizzle Fry 03-13-2006, 09:41 PM Nice. I might have to come check it out.
79BIG10 03-13-2006, 11:24 PM What about a wire harness for gauges? I've got them all wired in but it's a big cluster right now. I want to clean it up with just one plug to tie them all together if I need to take the bezel off. Any opinions on previous purchases?
cdowns 03-14-2006, 02:47 PM i'm using a 12 circuit from it's a snap on my roadster pjoject// i like the small fuse panel ,plenty of excess wire and it's easy to work with. will use again if i have any further projects that need ground up wiring
tedbick 03-14-2006, 08:26 PM i just received a catalog from ron francis wiring.has anyone ever used any of there products?seems like pretty comparible to painles. they are at ron francis.com

Do you know how or if that 21 kit has a connection for dual headlights on a GMC?
55ChevyPU 03-19-2006, 12:32 AM I went with a painless on my truck and my father just recently purchased a 21 circuit from its-a-snap. Id end up buying a wire harness from its-a-snap if I need another for a different project just because its basically the same thing but has got a smaller fusebox. The its-a-snap only had one headlight connecter from what I saw in the package.
