Accel wires are nice, but I think that MSD has a little better quality wire. I am running Accel wires in my Cutlass and stock AC Delco in my truck. Unless you are running a high output ignition, I wouldn't blow a wad of cash on wires. I would stick with AC Delco then. Just my opinion though. I haven't had much experience with Bosch, but I am going to be putting a set of their plugs in my 93 TBI 454 and I will see how well those work. I am going to try the Platinums with the 4 outter electrodes. If you want to spend the money, I really like MSD. On my Cutlass I am running a MSD ignition. I have the MSD billet distributer, MSD Blaster 2 Coil, and MSD 6AL control box. But I think that I am running Accel wires. I will switch to MSD some day here. Just this man's opinion though! HtownPapiJc 03-16-2006, 05:09 PM Wut does running a high output ignition do for your motor? rockman20 03-16-2006, 05:20 PM Gives you a hotter spark. Make it easier for the plug to fire. Meaning cylinder combustion is better. You definitely want hotter spark if you are running more compression. More compression creates more resistance for the spark to jump the gap in the plug. Will hotter help a stock motor? It might. Would I blow the wad of cash on it? Depends on what my future plans for the vehicle are. To remain stock, no, I wouldn't spend that kind of money. My Cutlass woke up a bit when I did that. But it still had the old points ignition so any kind of upgrade is better then that! :) HtownPapiJc 03-16-2006, 05:41 PM Ahh ok got ya. The future plans of my 305 isnt to keep it stock. Just figured while i have the upper manifold and plugs all out might as well put in something that could help later on down the road. Im lookin at putting some performance headers on it as well. And ne thing else that could get more hp outta that 305. So yalls suggestions are greatly appericated!! piecesparts 03-16-2006, 06:57 PM I installed the MSD coil and wires on my 91 TBI motor, with the MSD 6AL "multi-spark unit". This seemed to make a great difference in idle and performance overall. The thought is to get every ounce of fuel consumed in the cylinders as I can, since it is not cheap anymore. The plug wires are good for a lower resistance and this increases horsepower by allowing for a hotter spark. I went with a set of shorty headers even though they don't allow for all of the horsepower that a set of "long tube" headers would. The fact that they were easy to install was the approach there. I didn't have to tear up my exhaust to much. Z16 03-16-2006, 08:26 PM Best headers for that truck are Edelbrock. They are stainless steel, and fit like a glove. Bit more money, but worth it. The MSD 6A, coil and wires do help idle and for sure mileage. They are also a real good quality wire that will last a long time. With the MSD 6A you will want to go to a standard plug, as platinums don't stand up that well to the extra spark energy HtownPapiJc 03-17-2006, 09:55 AM Best headers for that truck are Edelbrock. Hey Z16 u got ne pics of your truck would love to see wuts under the hood as well as the body thx again HtownPapiJc 03-17-2006, 02:42 PM Hey where can i find those MSD parts. Been lookin on summit and jegs but cannt find the right one for my truck 305/5.0 rockman20 03-17-2006, 03:02 PM MSD-6420 is for the ignition controller. This is on Summit's website and is the 6AL. I would run the 6AL because of the soft touch rev limiter. It is very nice to have. I have bounced my 69 Olds off that rev limiter a couple times when I have accidently gone from 2nd gear to Neutral when I am manually shifting. As for your distributer and such, I guess that I am unsure of on that. Does that have the crank trigger setup? I've never worked with something like that so I am at a loss on what to get there. But from what I know, the 6AL will work with pretty much any setup. HtownPapiJc 03-17-2006, 04:14 PM shhh i couldnt tell ya weather it had that trigger thing or not. Not really sure wut im looking for on that distr. Z16 03-17-2006, 05:55 PM Appreciate the suggestions guys..... Hey Z16 u got ne pics of your truck would love to see wuts under the hood as well as the body thx again I'm just in the process of builing an engine, with more goodies including Edelbrock E-Tec heads, and some internal goodies, plus a good tranny and converter. Hoping for 350-375hp. After I get it finished, I'll post some pics. You won't get to see the body til spring when I get a set on 20's on it. I will tell ya it's the same color as yours, for now. As for the distributor, you really have no choice if you are keeping the Vortec fuel injection, but the stock plastic bodied distrubutor. I'm not sure who at GM thought a plastic distributor was a good idea? It's kind of a crank trigger setup. piecesparts 03-17-2006, 06:48 PM What I have done in the past is to go to the MSD website http://www.msdignition.com/ and get the numbers of what I want and need. I even call their tech line and talk to them for info, then I go to the Summit website and type in the numbers and see if their site kicks it up. Summit and Jegs do not show everything that they have or can get, but if they carry the MSD line, then they can get whatever is available from the factory. In most cases, cheaper than from MSD direct. I found the igitn. on summit. Lookin fo the right coil to install. The one on summit&msd site was for the 96-97 model only. Wondering if that coil would work on mines... Z16 03-18-2006, 11:10 PM The distributor is stock for now. I am looking at a stand alone fuel injection setup, and at that point, it will end up with a crank trigger ignition. That might be for a different truck and much wilder engine. I'mkinda learning computerized performance on this one, is hopes of applying it to a much faster truck The plug wire part number for your truck is 32169 for red, 32163 for black. The coil number 8231. If you want to run a MSD box, use wire harness 8877. This makes it a plug in installation. |
