View Full Version : Bad Paint
91 SUBURBAN LANE 03-14-2006, 12:44 AM Well I took my 91 Suburban to the car wash to clean it up and the Paint came off....Is anyone else having or had this happen to there Suburban????? I will post pix's as soon as the roll is done. And if I sand off the paint will that be good or do I need to go to the metal, and start over?????
Bob Gervais 03-14-2006, 04:38 AM This was actually a pretty common problem for GM, Ford and Chrysler back in the mid 80's-early 90's. It was apparently due to the primer that was used under the topcoat of paint, and caused the peeling you are having. My Burb did the same thing, someone did a hackjob of a repair, and it's happening again. The rest of the body has some rot on it, so I'm planning on repairing that and repainting the whole truck.
In all of the cases of bad primer, the vehicle had to be stripped or sanded down to bare metal, reprimed, and repainted. In your case, I would recommend sanding down to the metal, and spraying some self etching primer, and either primer sealer or another paint that's going to repel moisture and water.
The problem is, the exposed primer from peeling will absorb moisture, and eventually cause surface rust. Primer sealer, and of course regular paint in rattle cans, will repel moisture and prevent surface rust.
This is a temporary fix, and may not look all that good, but it'll get you through until you can have the truck painted.
72freak 03-14-2006, 06:14 AM yep........I believe the story goes......The EPA tightened down on some of the chemicals in paint/products and unfortunatly GM didnt get the new stuff worked out until they had painted about 500 million vehicles. Just about every GM product form the late 80's to ?????? about 92????? has a peeling problem. Most lasted till they were out of warantee but our family managed to get 2 vehicles re-painted for free at the dealership. This little problem turned out to be one of Gm's biggest goofs....next to the 4 door, automatic with air conditioning, diesel, Chevette !!!!!
The best part is you will have to get all that paint off to re-paint it!!!
screwballl 03-14-2006, 10:03 AM this lasted until 93 or 94... most trucks/burbs had it cured by 92 model year but vans and many cars didn't until 94... father in law has a 93 Cavalier and its happening to it, co-orker has a 93 Astro van and it happening all over to hers.. if you want it to stay nice just give it a new paint job taken down to the primer in most places along the hood and roof and fenders... the rest usually doesn't do it...
Jonboy 03-15-2006, 08:33 AM The "official" fix from GM was to strip the paint, and lightly sand the e-coat. That sounds great in theory, but in reality you pretty much end up stripping the whole vehicle. I am 31, so you can pretty much guess when I started in the body shop business.....
Anyhow, to do it right, you will want to remove all of the color from the vehicle. Try to leave as much of the e-coat as you can, as it is applied similar to powder coating, and will go a long way to fight corrosion. Apply an etching primer to the surfaces you are painting, followed by a good sealer. We used an epoxy sealer, but that may be a little overkill. Then you can topcoat as desired. That is the version in a nutshell. The biggest downside is material cost. You are probably looking at at least $1000 in materials to do it right, assuming you are doing all of the labor yourself.
That being said, I have a grey 91 Sub that I use as a beater. It is peeling badly, and will probably stay that way, too.
91 SUBURBAN LANE 03-15-2006, 09:14 AM Hi to all, Well I could sand it all day long, but I don't have a place to keep it. So I would have to prime it as I go, and that's not the look I want for my SUBURBAN. I could alway's cut lose with a pressure washer, or just go back to the car wash. You know to see were I stand. Or sould I say how much paint will fly.The thing that get's me is the primer is holding fast. Will burn up roll, and post pix's soon. Never took so many pix's of the cat's in all my life. It is on the hood and top of the suburban. I guess this fall's back on the saying ---( the Dirt is holding it together )BACK AWAY FROM THE CAR WASH :gi:
screwballl 03-16-2006, 09:21 PM don't feel bad, I washed my burb this past weekend for the first time in the year that I've owned it... the sides are ok because it was repainted within the past few years but the hood and roof had/has super flat sheen to them and needed washed.. I got some wax on the hood so it is at least a satin sheen now...
