View Full Version : Not another build thread! Progress on my '67
67ChevyRedneck 06-28-2006, 11:06 PM I'm not sure which mounts you're referring to?
If you mean the seat mounts, no, they are the stock seat mounts off a 93 silverado that came with the 93 bench seat, I just set them back farther so I didn't have to modify them for the "hump" in the floor that runs from door to door.
If you mean the cab mounts, no again, the frame mounts are stock and the actual cab mounts were a kit I got from GMC Pauls.
I think you were referring to one of the two?
I was referring the the cab mounts... meaning the bracket part... they look new in the pic... I need to replace mine on a different model truck so I was wondering if you had made them or bought them. If I could buy mounts it would certainly be easier then making them. :)
67ChevyRedneck 07-10-2006, 09:17 PM BACK TO WORK! I started another long friday off packing up the dogs and driving to Cola to work on the ole girl again. I made good use of my CCP hidden hinges for the 67. The instructions were a little vague but they did tell you what size drill bits you need. Of course, I don't have a big honkin 1/2 drive drill.... so I had fun wallering out the big holes with a 3/8" bit:crazy: You have to drill out the side of the tailgate first (keeping the top of the hole against the back edge of the tailgate (the inside edge). You then have to guestimate where to drill the hole for the mounting screw, and you could then figure out where to drill the two holes for the slider and cut out the section between the two. The final step is to shut the gate, snap the latches, punch a hole and drill (or waller) out a 1/2 hole in the bedside for the rubber grommet.
67ChevyRedneck 07-10-2006, 09:21 PM Look MA! No chains! With a fellow board memebers help, I hope to have a set of hidden hinges on next time as well.
67ChevyRedneck 07-10-2006, 09:23 PM Ok, here's where I win the f*tard of the year award, I wasn't happy with the front clip of the truck... sooooooo, I repainted it:crazy:
67ChevyRedneck 07-10-2006, 09:24 PM I also sanded the bed back down a bit and put some "real" primer on it.
67ChevyRedneck 07-10-2006, 09:25 PM And I got up nice and early again and painted the bed and the front clip.
67ChevyRedneck 07-10-2006, 09:27 PM I will admit that I half, well you know what, the inside of the bed...big time. I plan on sanding the wood down a bit and staining it and the inner bedsides will be coated with a bedliner stuff. Just a driver, no show truck here:)
67ChevyRedneck 07-10-2006, 09:31 PM Bill didn't like the fact that my truck was only a day-ly driver so I cleaned up the headlight buckets, rings, and lights, and reinstalled them. I also hit the core support with some flat black to make it stand out better behind the grill (yes, I got so excited I was finally painting it last month that I forgot to tape the backside of the grill off)
67ChevyRedneck 07-10-2006, 09:34 PM Looks like I got to bust out some bling too! Just as a side note.... REPOP FENDERS DO NOT HAVE THE HOLES DRILLED OUT FOR THE HEADLIGHT TRIM RINGS. It's scary drilling fresh paint:(
67ChevyRedneck 07-10-2006, 09:37 PM Here's a few more shots of what's been done so far. Next time (probably a few weeks from now) I'll have the rear fenders, steps and tailgate in paint. I should also have all of the "bling" on the front end, including my super ultra cool (what a dork, huh?) fog light (excuse me, driving lights) front bumper. Whooo flippity hooooo. I might acutally be able to drive this sum beech in a couple months!
Palf70Step 07-10-2006, 09:49 PM Congrats, but boy you bettter slow down...you are getting to fer ahead of me. ;)
Work and progress looks great on the truck. Looking forward to seeing the final assembly and tire melting. :D
67ChevyRedneck 07-11-2006, 10:55 AM I promised the girlfriend I'd leave the "other woman" alone for a few weeks and spend the next couple weekends with her before she goes back to UGA to her junior year in graduate vet school (she's gonna be like 25 when she finally graduates but she'll be making lots of money so I can buy more projects:lol:) SO you've got about 3 weeks to catch up:lol: I'm gonna be pushin for early september.... now where am I gonna get another $1,800 to finish???
Palf70Step 07-11-2006, 01:03 PM I think you might still beat me even with that delay. It is looking nuce though.
jimmydean 07-12-2006, 10:00 AM That's looking great! You've gotten a lot farther than I have on mine in the near year I've had it. I told myself when I started the new job in January that I would make progress since I wouldn't be driving and I still drive it too much.
Man, this board sure is motivation to do stuff though!
glock35ipsc 07-12-2006, 10:33 AM Looking great! I really like that color!
ThatOneBlue67 07-14-2006, 04:51 PM I like the color as well! It looks very familiar... I'm looking forward to attempting a gas tank relocation of my own.

"67"StepSide 07-15-2006, 10:01 PM Nice job!!!!!! Love to see progress!!! :c2: :five:
67ChevyRedneck 07-16-2006, 04:08 PM The color is a 1999 (and I'm sure it applied to many other years as well, I just so happened to see it under 1999 in the paint book) GM medium blue metallic. It looks dark in some of the pics, but in person the color is actually pretty light and somewhat close to the original interior color of the truck (the truck was originally blue interior with white exterior). I love progress too!
HotRod71 07-16-2006, 04:44 PM I was gonna say it looked like Med. Quasar Blue Metallic that was on my 91 Vette. Looks great
67ChevyRedneck 07-16-2006, 04:48 PM I like the color as well! It looks very familiar... I'm looking forward to attempting a gas tank relocation of my own.
I actually didn't think it was hard at all. The only difficult part is how and where your going to get fuel IN the tank.
67ChevyRedneck 07-17-2006, 08:19 AM I worked real hard this weekend on the truck.... I somehow managed to paint my repop bowtie the same color as the truck and put some clear on it. Well, at least as close as Wal-Mart's med. blue metallic spray can paint is:)
I also painted the two grill pieces white, haven't cleared them yet, and I started to clean up all of the brackets and taillights for the bed.
I just read this thread from start to finish (took about 1/2 hour for all the pics to load w/stupid dialup connection) and just want to say you should be proud of the job you've done on your truck! It looks great.:D
Scrubby 07-17-2006, 12:16 PM Very awesome job! This thread is inspiring! I need to get off my butt and get working on my blazer!

BigSky71 07-17-2006, 04:16 PM Awesome work! I have been apprehensive about shooting color at home [but I have no real option], so this thread is a great motivation!
67ChevyRedneck 07-28-2006, 09:20 AM I've been "piddlin" with a few things this week. I got the grill inserts cleaned up and painted. I got the turn signals cleaned up and painted white inside and out (should make the bulbs brighter) and put them together. I also put in some new orange bulbs and new clear marker lights. Can't wait to get this stuff on the truck!
67ChevyRedneck 07-30-2006, 10:17 PM I got back to it this weekend. I had to work late friday:( and it rained most of saturday, so there was no paintin' or primin' this weekend. Oh well, it didn't really matter much anyway because it took most of the weekend to install all of the front end goodies and do my hidden hinges on the tailgate. So... HERE GOES! I started off by installing new hood letters and getting the grill inserts and chrome pieces on:
LUV2XCLR8 07-30-2006, 10:19 PM :phat: Very nice work :metal:
67ChevyRedneck 07-30-2006, 10:21 PM I've had bad luck in the past with repop bumpers rusting on the backside so I coated this sucker with rust encapsulator! Me-1; Rust-0 (awww, who am I kidding, rust always wins, right?) I also coated the brackets, bolted them suckers onto the bumper, and installed the bumper. If your wondering about the bumper, it's a "tri-plus" unit that I bought. It's "special" because it has driving lights in it. I was not able to hook them up because I got a killer deal on the bumper as it was the last one at The Truck Shop had at the Charlotte auto fair and they couldn't find the wiring and switch kit for it:banghead: Guess I'll have to come up with my own:rolleyes:
67ChevyRedneck 07-30-2006, 10:25 PM The last part of the grill to install was the turn signals and bowtie. I put them in the truck (after lightly scuffing a few spots so they were grounded) and tested 'em out! I also got the headlight bezels in as well. I really like the clear lenses with the orange bulbs. With the buckets painted white they are pretty bright (brigher than they were with the faded amber lenses) AND when the turn signals flash they are plenty bright!
67ChevyRedneck 07-30-2006, 10:27 PM The headlights work too! High AND low beam:lol:
67ChevyRedneck 07-30-2006, 10:31 PM Now for the "not so fun" part of the weekend.... installing hidden hinges on a stepside tailgate! Start by cutting out a section on the BACKSIDE of the tailgate. This is necessary so the hinge will have a place to fold into. I cut about 1/2" from the edge of the 'gate and then ground about another 1/16 down.
67ChevyRedneck 07-30-2006, 10:33 PM I got this idea from Putter so I already had an idea of what the measurements should be, so I went from there and drilled a hole in the bedside and tailgate, but whoops silly me, measure twice and drill ONCE!!!!
67ChevyRedneck 07-30-2006, 10:34 PM Here's what she looks like with the new hinges down and up!
67ChevyRedneck 07-30-2006, 10:36 PM After that was all squared away, the sides of the tailgate that were cut earlier needed to be welded back up and while I was at it I filled in my "oops" hole that I drilled wrong earlier! My welding skills still kinda suck but I should be able to hide a bit of it will a skim coat of filler. Plus, it's on the BACKSIDE of the tailgate anyway:metal:
67ChevyRedneck 07-30-2006, 10:38 PM I did put a couple hours into the "bondo buckets" that are my back fenders:crazy: There really isn't as much as it looks, but if I ever get to do a "frame off" these suckers are going bye bye!
67ChevyRedneck 07-30-2006, 10:41 PM And finally, after cleaning up my big mess, I gave the old girl a bath before I put her away. She was real dirty from all the sanding dust and from sitting under a tree:( (I can't wait to take 'er home with me!) So here are a few fun shots of her all cleaned up.
67ChevyRedneck 07-30-2006, 10:42 PM Here's a couple more for the heck of it:)
67ChevyRedneck 07-30-2006, 10:45 PM :phat: Very nice work :metal:
How'd you sneak in there?
I really appreciate all of the comments fellers. They keep me motivated to keep this $$ pit going and to see her on the road once again! It's hard enough finding time and $$ to work on a project...it's even harder driving 2 hours to work on it, work my ass off, then drive home, then go work another 45 hour week at work. I'm about wore thin, but I can see light at the end of the tunnel!!!!
67ChevyRedneck 07-30-2006, 10:58 PM Almost forgot! I was lucky enough to find some Medium metallic blue paint in a spray can at wally world. I painted my bowtie with it and cleared it and the color seemed off, I guess the clear coat made it look "off" a bit. Since the truck was painted with all the parts on there was a bit of primer under the hood still, and I figured if it's off, it's off. So I masked away and painted the top of the grill today (the area that would be under the hood). Looks to be a spot on match! I'll know for sure when I go back next week to see if it has cured the same! This is good news as I'll be needing to mask off the doors and do the door jams seperately (but not until the truck is back in greenville, that's something I can do in the apt.'s parking lot:metal:)
Richard Dobson 07-31-2006, 09:23 AM I am installing the (2) grill trim pieces that are aftermarket. Polished aluminum anodized I presume. The retainers that hold them on are a pain (14) each trim piece. I happen to have an extra original grill that still had some of the retainers in it, needless to say they were a better design, but they had rubber part that compressed along with one leaf spring which was a better design. Did you have much trouble installing the trim? Any advice? Thanks
67ChevyRedneck 07-31-2006, 10:49 AM Yup, I did have trouble installing the trim. I don't know what the "originals" looked like because by the time I got my old painted grill pieces off a few months ago (that I sold to a board member) the clips basically decintegrated (sp?) and broke to pieces. My trim came from The Truck Shop and they use "counterparts" for their repop stuff. I thought they were a little on the "cheap" side as well as the headlight bezels. I don't know what the genious who made the new clips was thinking, but mine came with these huge black nuts that were supposed to go on the backside of the grill???? NO WAY!!! They were about 3X too wide!!! I went to a local hardware store (I brought a clip with me) and found small nuts that fit on them. There was no way the others would have worked:crazy: Also, if you have the same clips I do, there is a curved hooked side and a longer straight stick with a little 90 degree bend on it. The curved area ALWAYS goes to the inside of the grill (the thicker, wider area). I pushed this end in first, then pushed the cresent shaped bolt part in, then you have to push the long straight piece in. You can slide them to where they need to go, but they don't move easily, so I put my trim piece up to the grill each time I installed one so I didnt' have to move it much. I would also use a socket on one of them screwdriver things because an actual wratchet to "too much" for these little bolts.
Hoped I've helped more than confused, and once again, yes, they are a pain in the butt to install:(
Putter 08-01-2006, 09:40 AM Glad to see that those tailgate hangers worked out for you.
I STILL haven't gone to get replacements for myself, yet.
You sure have come a long way, and it is looking great.
Keep up the hard work....that light is getting closer in that tunnel.
Richard Dobson 08-02-2006, 12:14 PM Back to the (2) grill trim pieces, For as much $ as they cost they are very cheaply made. They have scratches from the tooling die when they were stamped out. Mine were missing the 10-24 nuts, the track that the keepers is supposed to be able to slide inside of was all distorted, but we have to make them work because it is the only source for the parts. Regards
ThatOneBlue67 08-03-2006, 02:45 AM Not looking to hijack your thread here RedNeck,
What about just getting the better quality originals chromed? I dunno if y'all have ever gotten the cahnce to compare between original and aftermarket, but he original trim pieces weight at least twice as much! I've got two pairs of headlight bezels, is chroming expensive do ya s'pose?
67ChevyRedneck 08-06-2006, 11:12 PM GOOD LORD! was it HOT this weekend! I got to columbia friday and dove into work on the rear fenders and tailgate. As it got darker I decided to install some of my bowtie overdrives TV made EZ kit. This involved removing my carb. I knew it would be dirty (I've cleaned it twice before) so I took the carb apart... but NEVER was it THIS dirty! There was, I kid you not, an 1/8" of silt on the bottom of the floats. How did this thing still run you wonder? I don't rightly know either???
67ChevyRedneck 08-06-2006, 11:19 PM SO I took the ENTIRE innards of the carb out, (I mean everything!) and cleaned the crap out of it with carb cleaner and a good ole air hose set at 90 psi:) I cleaned everything out 3X just to be sure! This was one of my biggest motivators to do an underbed tank, I knew the one in the cab was crap to begin with. I did check the fuel filter, (it's a clear one) been on the truck 3 months and still clean as can be:) I had to keep some of my old 700R4 tv cable bracket because it had the return spring for my gas pedal on it, so I cut off the part I didn't need (it was in the way of the new BTO kit) and reinstalled it. I then put the BTO piece on the carb and tightened it down. Then with the supplied gaskets I put the BTO piece on the manifold, put the carb back on, tightened everything down, and the beast fired right back up:)
Sorry, but I forgot to take pics of the inside of the cleaned carb (it's clean in the first pic) and of it back on the intake:rolleyes:
I did not hook up the BTO kit yet because my tranny is junk:) There will be more on that in what looks to be more like late september.....:(
67ChevyRedneck 08-06-2006, 11:23 PM It RAINED like crazy starting at about 3 pm saturday, so at 6 I took the rest of the night off and went out to eat with the family....mmmmm....texas roadhouse... I got back to it sunday morning and got the steps and tailgate ready for primer. Bad news is that I ran out of primer and need to buy more to finish the fenders:banghead:
I also got the taillight brackets cleaned up too.
What do y'all think of my spray booth stand? Purty neat-O, huh?
67ChevyRedneck 08-06-2006, 11:28 PM FINALLY, and I mean FINALLY! The rear fenders are FINALLY starting to look like fenders again. Once again, I normally HATE to see this much bondo on anything, buy I'm too deep in it now (and too out of money) for another set. Maybe them repops will drop down to $500 a set in a couple years?? I almost feel bad posting these, but I figure, what the hell, it's just a home built driver. I'm trying:rolleyes:
67ChevyRedneck 08-06-2006, 11:32 PM I figure I have another good day or so into the rear fenders and I'm going to prime the hell out of them and sand em back down. They should look ok? The tailgate and steps are almost ready for paint....it's comming along!
Then I open up the doors and see this:(
The plans for the interior are: Get the truck running/painted and to GREENVILLE! Tape everything off and finish spray-canning the doors and jams royal blue. I have new carpet, real nice door panels and a few other pieces to finish it up, but that will be absoluetely last on the list! I was hoping to take 'er up to charlotte in september... looks like it won't make it until next spring!
ThatOneBlue67 08-06-2006, 11:57 PM It looks to me like you do real good metalwork there and, hey, sometimes you just gotta kick the bucket and cut corners. Anywaym lookin' forward to seeing the old girl with her fenders back on.
Tynee 08-07-2006, 12:03 AM I'm impressed with how you've stuck with it for the duration of this project to this point. It makes you feel a little less sympathetic to the guys who have a garage full of tools and projects in their back yard and can't keep motivated/keep losing interest, doesn't it?
When I finally get started on mine, I'll be reading through your thread at the end of a long hard day of working on the truck just to keep my juices flowing.
Palf70Step 08-07-2006, 05:24 AM Looking good. I think yours will still make the road before mine ;)
ChevyDude 08-07-2006, 10:24 AM You have done a heck of a job!!!! Your truck looks awesome and done right at home! Fantasic...I am just nuts about the 67-68' front...when I finish my 71' or maybe even before...a 67-68' is and just has to be, in the cards!
67ChevyRedneck 09-04-2006, 11:26 PM It's been a little while, so it's time for an update! I started the long weekend off by painting the backside of the tailgate and the "steps." I then painted all of the brackets, the backside of the bumper, and the backside of the "steps."
67ChevyRedneck 09-04-2006, 11:31 PM I got the rear bumper put on too. It was a bit of a pain. Apparently my bed was about an inch too low??? I don't know how that happened? So with my redneck shimming skills I was able to raise the bed high enough to get the rear bumper brackets in place. Now that the bed is raised it does look better, the steps match the bottom cab line better.
67ChevyRedneck 09-04-2006, 11:34 PM After staring at the shiney stuff for a while I got the steps on the truck. Kinda funny, but I think the steps are the best looking thing that I've painted for the truck so far  I guess I'm getting better?
67ChevyRedneck 09-04-2006, 11:37 PM I also spent way too much time (again) on these here back fenders.
67ChevyRedneck 09-04-2006, 11:40 PM After a lot of sanding, hand sanding, more sanding, cussing at the skeeters, and more sanding.... they finally look like this:metal:
There's still more to do. I laid this primer on THICK. I think I put about 1/4" of primer on  Now that they're in primer I can see the "bad spots" better and I'll fix 'em next weekend and finally have some paint on the suckers.
67ChevyRedneck 09-04-2006, 11:44 PM The last thing I did this weekend (after helping to pressure wash a house  was get the sway bar kit installed. What's up with the grease that comes with the ECE kit? That stuff is nasty sticky. The kit was SUPER easy to install, and I would have had it installed in under an hour if one of the rivets in the frame didn't decided to be a PI the A. I ended up having to drill almost all the way through it :banghead: Well, even so, about an hour and a half after starting I had a sway bar!
67ChevyRedneck 09-04-2006, 11:56 PM More to come next weekend :)
smbrouss70 09-05-2006, 01:37 AM Looking good! Can't wait to see it finished, I just brought a stepside bed home this weekend, and I'm thinking I want to go with just a little darker shade of blue than you have. But seeing yours painted may be close enough to help me decide for sure.
Good Job, looking great, you can see the light at the end of the tunnel!!
boundstaffpress 09-05-2006, 09:18 AM Looks great. It's really starting to come together.
67ChevyRedneck 09-07-2006, 08:19 AM The rims came IN!!!!
Tynee 09-07-2006, 09:15 AM SWEET!! they look great. Can't wait to see 'em on the truck.
67chevemall 09-07-2006, 11:45 AM Oh you lucky dogg!!!!!!!
Man I need another job maybe two more........
67ChevyRedneck 09-07-2006, 12:17 PM Don't be jealous. I've been "broke" since February. I FINALLY paid off the credit card I bought all the parts on just this month! (It was zero % int. until Nov.) All I have left to buy is the tranny and I should be able to pay cash for that and buy the tires (I have a lot of overtime I'm going to "cash out" this month.) If I didn't have to drive to columbia to work on the truck I'd probably have about $700 more to spend on the truck, but I had to spend it on gas to get there.
timcos 09-07-2006, 01:12 PM You can make 1000 a month part time delivering pizzas.
Palf70Step 09-07-2006, 09:22 PM Wheels look great. That puppy will be suckin down the gas regularly before you know it :D
67ChevyRedneck 09-10-2006, 07:11 PM You can make 1000 a month part time delivering pizzas.
With the mileage my Z71 gets I highly doubt my "profit" after fuel would be that high
First off, I'd like to say thank you to those who guided me in the right direction on my bumper. With the brackets in the correct position I was able to lower the bed back down (it was too high once the bumper was lowered) to where it should be!!! THANKS GUYS! Who would have thought the brackets were SUPPOSED to be crooked (see pics.) My truck formerly had 73-87 modified cut up brackets made to fit.
With that taken care off.... I was in columbia for the second week in a row with one thing in mind.... FINISH THE PAINT WORK BECUASE I'M SICK OF PAINTING THIS DAMN TRUCK
67ChevyRedneck 09-10-2006, 07:18 PM I didn't feel like working yet and I really wanted to see what my truck would look like with the "new" rims on it.... so I tried on the new shoes. I freaked out at first because without rubber on the rims it looked like they were going to hit the bedsides, but with a tape measure and level I determined there is a full 2" between the rim and bed :) The rims look small, but they are 15x8's and they are going to get 235/75/R15 tires.
I know you shouldn't leave a truck set on a jack, but I was far away from it and with no fender on to whack me in the head, I felt safe
67ChevyRedneck 09-10-2006, 07:22 PM I spent some time on the taillight brackets and the fuel filler door to get them ready to go on the truck. The taillight brackets looked pretty good on the truck, everything was primed before paint. The white looking things are the reverse light buckets.
67ChevyRedneck 09-10-2006, 07:27 PM The work on tailgate took a few days to complete. I got it prepped for paint fiday night, painted it early saturday morning, then got the letters on it saturday evening. I also sprayed a bedliner on the backside. I left the top and bottom exposed on purpose (this truck will never haul anything anyway). Once the truck is back to G-ville, I'll do the entire inside of the bed just like the tailgate (the whole inside of the bedsides (but not the top rails) and the floor will be sanded and stained.) I got the gate on the truck after painting and greasing the tailgate round mounting thingys (yup, thats a technical term!)
