Well, I think everyone likes build threads, so it's about time I start my own.

Background:

I bought the '67 in 1996 from my uncle. I lived in a rural town in southwest NY and my uncle drove the truck up from SC. He decided to sell it and not drive it back home. I paid $1,400 for it with new brakes and tires all the way around. I basically added a stereo, some speakers, replaced the heater core, sanded the body down, my dad sprayed it with a primer with clear, and I drove it when there was no snow on the ground for the next 2 1/2 years. It had the stock 250 six popper, 3 speed converted to the floor, and 3.73 rear. It sat for the next 3 1/2 years while I attended Clemson University in Clemson, SC. I lived with the same uncle who sold me the truck in columiba SC in the summers when I wasn't at school. He trailered the truck down from NY for me and that summer I began a mild rebuild.

The 250 and 3spd were tossed in favor of a rebuilt 350 from advance (quit laughing it was only $700 and I still had a year of school left) and a junkyard 700R4. I also pirated a complete power disk brake set up from a 71 GMC at a local 'yard. The suspension was tore down, cleaned, painted, and ALL NEW parts installed: rotors, calipers, brake lines, pads, ball joints, tie rods, bushings, etc... I got it all back together and running and ran out of money but I got to drive it to my last year of college...untill the trans blew in late February 2004. 2 years later I FINALLY have the money to finish it. UNFORTUNATELY I live in an apartment complex in Greenville, SC (2 hours from where my unlces house, and the truck, are in columbia.) So I have to "plan" weekends to work on it.

What I've done recently: Purchased goodmark doors and fenders coated/painted them inside and out (the backside) with eastwoods rust encapsulator and topped that off with a coating of truck bedliner. Got a nice rust free set of rear fenders, need to start cleaning them up. I've installed a set of split bench seats from a 93 silverado and added insulation to the cab floor. I've also installed new cab mounts. I hope to get it back on the road by July of this year in a coat of Maui Blue paint. I'll keep this thread open for progress. Enjoy.

The motor used to look pretty. I took the truck "muddin" a couple times and never cleaned it. That will change when she is painted all pretty.

Lookin good, wow that was a new york truck?

Nope, not originally. It was built in the St. Lous plant and ended up in Brownsfield, Tx for a few years. It then somehow made its way to Columbia, SC. My uncle drove it to NY (with my aunt complaining how hot it was the whole way:lol: ) and decided to sell it. He took a greyhound back to columbia, SC. The truck sat for sale in front of my grandpas house for $1,800 for about 3 months. I begged him every week to sell it to me, but the best I could do was $1,400. He sold it to me and I drove it to HS and to work but only during the spring, summer, fall. The truck has never seen a salted road. I went to college in Clemson, SC and eventuelly moved to greenville, SC. The truck was only in NY from 1996 to 2003, and like I said it never saw salt, BUT the humidity took its toll. When I fist bought the truck you could read the chalk numbers on the still black painted frame. From it's 7 year stay in NY the frame now has a light coating of surface rust. They body is fairly straight and solid, but my lack of time, my own garage, and skills lead me to ditch my doors and fenders for goodmark units. When I do get my own house/garage the truck will be torn down completely, but for now I have/am replacing all the body panels and mechanical components I can, so if I ever get hitched to my girl of 2 1/2 years, I'll have alraedy spent 90% of the money needed to fully restore the truck, that way she can't complain too much! Wow, that was long winded

Got some more stuff done this weekend. I got some of the dents straighter in my new "used" 67 rear step fenders with a hammer and dolly. They are completely rust free, so I can't complain too much. I also stripped all of the old undercoating from the rear fenders with a chemical stripper (that was a nasty mess). I cleaned up and painted the radiator overflow bottle and I painted my ECE 6 lug rotors and ECE sway bar.

Picked up some bling bling (old skewl style!) from the charlotte auto fair for my '67. I hope to head to columbia on friday to get the fenders and doors installed and lined up properly. Just for information purposes, I bought the repop tailgate for $150. It weighed 23 pounds and my stock gate weighed 25 pounds. The metal looks thick and solid. I had to carry it about a mile and a half back to my truck (and no, I'm not exagerating).... I'm sore as heck today....

I headed out to Columbia early friday morning to get some work done on the '67. After a 2 hour drive I fired "faith" up and drove her around to the garage. She purred like a kitten, even after sitting for almost a month. I dove right into work. Here's how she started friday:

67ChevyRedneck
04-16-2006, 07:14 PM
I cleaned up a few things.... I removed all of the old sealant from the cab with a wire wheel and then cleaned it up with some "rust encapsulator" and then put some new seam stuff back in. I also rebuilt the door hinges.

67ChevyRedneck
04-16-2006, 07:19 PM
Before mounting my new goodmark sheetmetal I spent a lot of time with eastwoods rust encapsulator painting every crevice on the backsides and insides of the doors and fenders. I then topped of the inside of the fenders with some truck bed coating and the inside of the doors with some rubberized undercoating. This was all done weeks ago so all I had to do this weekend was put the stuff on. I also rechecked my cab to make sure it didn't shift when I installed the new cab mounts. To my shock it was dead on! I WAS expecting to have to adjust it. That really made me happy. I also painted the front of the door jams and front of the doors with spray can blue because once this stuff is on, it's not coming back off! Don't forget to install new radiator support mounts!

67ChevyRedneck
04-16-2006, 07:25 PM
On to the good stuff. The goodmark stuff. You can see from the pics that it all fit nicely in the end, what you don't see is the entire day I had to spend installing it to get it that way! I am happy with the fit and finish. I am confident others can get it to fit this nice too. I am NOT A BODY MAN, just a hobbyist with patience. How did I get this stuff to fit? IT DOES NOT FIT OUT OF THE BOX! I had to bend the window frames about a half inch out on both sides. I used the old 2x4 method (charlie did the same thing on the '56 for American Hot Rod). I also had to enlarge existing holes to get the fenders to fit where I wanted and use spacers. I also had to apply a few taps from a body hammer here and there as well. I did not have the time or energy to finish the hood and cowl install. I did this all by myself and was comepletely exhausted today. The hood and cowl (original pieces, NOT goodmark) are sitting in place and look like they will fit well with some play. Here are some pics of the fit I got, you be the judge on Goodmark quality.

I got it at the Charlotte auto fair from The Truck Shop. I got it for $150, they ran out of them and I got the display model. Almost all vendors carry them and they typically go anywhere from $185 to $225.

I ordered a door hinge rebuild kit from GMC pauls. I couldn't believe the stock bushings were plastic! The kit uses metal bushings. The pins were universal for 67-87 so they were too long. I hit them with a grinder to trim them.

The rear fenders are still on the truck. I bought the fender to replace the one on the truck now (it has holes covered with bondo:()

Thanks for the tip. I plan on sanding the edges and hitting the whole truck with some good primer (something like PPG and it will be with a real paint gun). If I had more time/money I'd love to paint the door jams and interior the same color as the outside of the truck, but since it was already spray can "royal blue" I left it that way:( The exterior color is going to be Maui Blue.

I wasn't able to do much this weekend, but I did manage to clean up and get my innner fenders ready for paint. The underneath will be coated with Rust Encapsulator tonight and the tops will be primed. I'll wait until I get them to columbia before I spray the tops so they don't get all messed up.

Ok fellers, calm down, the grill IS NOT for sale:lol: But I'm open to offers.... let's start the bidding at $300.... No seriously, it's not for sale:) I was shocked at how pristine my grill was. I found two dings in it smaller than a pencil eraser and only an 1/8" deep. I still need to drill out the rivvets to take the inserts out to clean them. I think I'm going to paint them white. The back is as nice as the front but I was too pooped to finish it yesterday... I also washed the Z71, cleaned my place up, and ran 3 miles!

Nice truck you got going there. I live in Easley, SC. I'm doing a 71 C-10 short fleetside with a 68 front clip, wood floor in the bed. Maybe we can plan a visit to discuss and view our projects.

My project is in Columbia, so it will be a while before she is in greenville (hopefully august???)

I got the grill back on the truck and primed. I got the cowl installed and shimmed and it looks pretty darned good. STILL not happy with the hood alignment. I'm going to have to tweak it some more. (I wasn't happy with the hood alignment with my "stock" fenders either, maybe my hood is f'ed up???) I got some adjustment tips on it, but didn't have time to try them.

Went to columbia again. The weather wasn't very cooperative this weekend, oh well, we need the rain. I didn't do a whole lot that would look cool in pics, so I didn't really take any this weekend. I got the hood finally aligned to where I was ok with it, I think my hood is a little tweaked, but I was able to bend it up some to get it to fit better.

I sanded down, cleaned and primed the door jams and window areas. I cleaned up the used window parts and coated them with rust encapsulator. I then had the fun pleasure of trying to install all of the window stuff without messing up the window area. I even used the "taping" method and STILL put a couple chips in the primer. I forgot how much a pain in the arse installing windows was. I got them in with all new seals and they roll up and down nicely.

I got the inner fenders in as well. AFTERMARKET INNER FENDERS SUCK. At least mine did. I bought them about 8 years ago. I never got them to fit right with my stock fenders, and the don't fit quite right with my repop fenders either. On the bright side, they do look nice around the wheel opening....just don't look under the truck:( I'm sure the quality has improved since 8 years ago.

The final thing I did was wire wheel out all of the old sealant around the drip rail and the line at the back of the cab. It got a coating of rust encapsulator and new sealant.

I'll be taking a few weeks off the truck to recoup physically and financially. I hope to be performing a "bodywork marathon" memorial weekend (fri-mon) and have the truck IN COLOR that monday. That would be the cab and front end only, the bed still needs a good bit of work.

OK OK, so I didn't do anything TO the truck this weekend (I know there's a lot of you picture junkies out there....because this thread has almost $1,500 hits:lol:) Anyway, I do have an update! I picked up the paint and primer for the truck this weekend. I got a gallon of each (paint and primer) and it should hopefully be enough. The primer is a general purpose high build/bare metal primer that can be painted over.

The paint color is going to medium blue metallic. The guy tried to help me find "maui blue" but was unable to locate it:( If this color looks as sweet on the truck as it does in the paint book I'm going to be very happy. The paint is going to be a "one step" urethane paint. I got the paint, primer, a good prep, some tach rags and a couple other paint supplies for $315. Wohoo! 2 more weeks!

I took friday off from work and headed to columbia with the intent of painting the cab and front end on the truck. I spent a couple days leveling out some areas along the cab. I then hand sanded the whole truck in prep for some primer. I also took the bed and fenders off. The bed looks tiny without the fenders on it. You folks in the rust belt may not want to view the following pictures. Please don't get upset with me for having rust free original cab corners. I'm from ellery, NY, so I know all about missing cab corners and toyota truck frames breaking in half while driving down the road from rust:rolleyes:

Here's a few shots of the blazer tank (recently installed) and my LMC dual exhaust kit which was installed 2 years ago, and yes, it is very tightly squeezed in there. If it looks to be just kinda "hangin there" that's because it is. The hangers bolt to the cross member under the bed.

67ChevyRedneck
05-30-2006, 12:03 PM
Here's the bed and the old fenders I'm not going to be using. That is not rust on the bed either, that is clemson orange clay. It's hard to wash a truck in primer, ya know? I am saving the fenders, so they are NOT for sale:)

I was real happy with the primer. It was by martins paint and it was a general all purpose primer. The guy at Napa said that its what most of the local auto body shops ordered for primer. It was a good high build primer. It sanded easy too. I was also able to spray it with NO RUNS!!!

And finally, what I had been waiting for for years and years. I PAINTED THE SUM BEECH! The color is medium metallic blue. I know I posted these in another thread, but I'm so happy to see her painted. I can finally WASH it when it gets dirty. ENJOY!!! (oh yeah, all of this was done (the bondo, primer, paint) in a 3 1/2 day period). I'm pooped.

I appreciate that, thanks! I started the thread hoping it would get others motivated (as well as keep me motivated to finish!) I figured I'd give it a try and see what I could do. It's coming out nice, but it sure seems to be taking forever! If I had my own garage that I didn't have to drive 2 hours to get to, this thing would be on the road already.

I have finished cleaning and stripping the rear fenders and steps and have 'em in some primer and I rust encapsulated the backsides. They need lots of straightening work now:( I plan on going to columbia this weekend and get the whole bed in primer!

The rain forced me to finish up in the garage and due to the crappy weather I was not able to put the "real" primer on the bed. I rust encapsulated underneath the bed rails as much as I could get (after it was all scuffed and hand sanded down) and I rust encapsulated the wheel well area. The spray cans were whipped out and the bare metal areas were covered.

I think I got a bad batch of bondo too??? NO matter how much hardener I added it was still a dull pink color??? Never had this happen before. I still dried within 30 minutes, but the sufrace was always "gummy" and was ruining my sanding disks! I'm still nowhere near done with these damn fenders:(
