I'm having a problem with sound in OE. Some things work, but when I click a link in an email, the sound will not come on with the clip, etc. Also, my notification of new mail, etc. sounds do not work. When I open attachments in mail, the sound works. I have tried re-setting everything in tools to no avail, and everything else I can think of that could effect it, but nothing seems to help. As a background, I ran a Norton (which is my virus protection) virus scan via a link that Shifty posted here concerning a virus scare recently, and that was the day it started. I have run ad-aware, spyware blaster, etc., and everything seems to be OK. No other problems in OE except these sound problems. Microsoft help is a joke as seems to be the usual case IMO, so no help there. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks, LB

The sound settings for Outlook Express are found under the "Sounds" tab in "Sounds and Audio Devices" in the Windows Control Panel. Maybe if you select the "Windows Default" sound scheme, it will put everything back the way it was originally. The "New Mail Notification" in the "Program events" list specifies the sound that plays when you receive new mail.

I have already been the control panel route to no avail, thanks. But I can't remember if I switched to default for sure, so I will try it again just to make sure.

I assume your Windows is up to date and you have all of the latest patches for Outlook Express and Internet Explorer (they come bundled together)

If you can post a hijackthis log, I can help you remove the downloaded program file associated with the online scan and we can see if that helps.

Thsi article from Microsoft may be of help: http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=318378

I suggest doing the 'sfc /scannow' mentioned and if that doesn't find any corrupted files, proceed with the rest of the article based on your version of SP.
