I got an 80's tach that came of of an 80's Chevy truck from a member on this board and hooked up and when I go to start the truck all it does is turn over but will not start. The tach goes to zero and seems to work as I turn the engine over but why does the wire hooked to the HEI when hooked into the HEI cause the truck to not start. When I pull the wire back off the HEI the truck starts right up. This really has me puzzeled. Any help appreciated. :)

the tach is bad, it is grounding out the ignition.

That is just great. Well, I asume he did not know when he sold it to me. I bought the whole cluster from a board memer on here. Oh well.

Found out the tach is not bad. Had the pink or red wire hooked to the HEI and the brown wire should have been hooked to the HEI and the pink wire should have gone to Ign and black to ground which I did have hooked up right. This was great news.:) :)

hey 86swb
did you use the whole cluster or did you use just the tach and fuel gauge.
ive got one from a 74 and was wandering if i could use the tach and fuel gauge in my 87 cluster and wire them individually.

thanks

I got the whole cluster that was out of an early '80 Chevy truck. I know that the '70's are not the same so I am not the one to help you there. But they do put those years in the later trucks like mine and yours. But I am sure there are those here who can help with with this. The one in mine now works great now that I have the wires hooked up right.
