For the fast few days instead of a crisp bummmp my sub has sounded more like muuumbb. Its almost like you put a coin or something on it. The lower the volume it is the worse the noise is. I took it out and it doesn't appear to be damaged in anyway. I did have to replace my starter just before this happned. Could this be an eletrical problem (bad ground, power wire) or am I in need of a new sub? I have had it a few years do they grow old and die? Thanks for any :help:

Look closely at the speaker element (paper, plastic, or whatever). I suspect you'll find a rip in the fabric, causing this noise. But, improper adjust of an amplifiers "gain" screw could also be at fault. There a lot of things to check. I wouldn't buy anything untill I had isolated the cause.

I looked it over pretty good and didn't see any rips.
It sounded fine till the starter went out.

The cone may have seperated from the coil on the inside. If you push on it...does it move freely or does it feel grindy? Pull it out of the box and look at the back.

It does have a grindy feel when you push it kinda like there is sandpaper in it. :whine:
I did pull it out and nothing looked damaged to me. I can get some pics if needed.

That grindy feel is most likely a blown sub...it should move nice and smooth. You can try it on another amp in another vehicle (or even on a home theater) if you have that opportunity just to double check, but I think it's time for a new one :(
What kind of sub and amp are you running?

Good call on the RF stuff. I am running the Punch 401s amp and 1 (was 2) 12" Punch P3's. Call RF and see if they can service the sub. I put my hand through one of my P3s :dohh: and they quote me $86 flat rate to repair the sub...that includes parts, labor, return shipping, and a 90day warranty. It may be cheaper for your sub. The number for RF is 1-800-669-9899.
Here's the pic of the setup before I punched my Punch :D
