That's not a bad location since it's in the windstream and ahead of the drivetrain heat. Some aircraft use a flush mounted temp sending unit along the side of the fuselage. The side of a car body would be the ideal place, but a flush mounted temp sender would be more expensive and unsightly since it should not be painted.
