View Full Version : 67 SWB build thread
kevncar 03-25-2006, 02:19 AM Another build thread?!?!? Well, everyone else is doing it so...here we go.
I bought my 67 off a friends brother about a year and a half ago. It's been pretty well beat on, but I'd like to do my part to keep one more on the road.
Here are the only "before" pictures I have.

I now have the bed and front clip off, and am debating taking the cab off. If I could find a good big window cab, it's coming off in a heartbeat. The 350 and four speed have been pulled and sold and I have a 454/TH400 to replace them with.
I am in the process of rebuilding the chassis. I am replacing all of the steering components, adding power steering, adding front disc brakes, adding tilt column, adding 4/6 drop, converting to 5-lug and getting new wheels and tires.
I really don't have the time or money to go all the way with the whole truck right now, but I am going to atleast get the chassis and drivetrain REAL healthy and just make it a good weekend parts truck, with the option to be a back up if one of the daily drivers go out. Ofcourse, the wife would be running the kids to pre-school in it if that happened because I commute 45 minutes, each way to work. I also need to immediately do something about the primer before she rusts away on me.
Beyond that, it'll have to wait. I also own a 72 Chevelle that I bought when I was 15 years old. I'd really like to get that going also, so the whole family (wife and two kids) can go cruising with me.
I am going to do my best to take pictures along the way, hoping something along the rusty road will help someone else on the board, like soooo many others have helped me.
rauto13 03-25-2006, 09:42 AM nice truck & keep the pics coming!!
Any idea what that booster and m/c are from?
matthufham 03-25-2006, 11:33 AM cool truck, good luck!
kevncar 03-25-2006, 02:12 PM Not sure what the booster is off of, but it looks a lot like the one that was on my 98 silverado.
Yukon Jack 03-25-2006, 02:14 PM Sounds like a great project you have in mind. Keep us posted.
67shortie 03-25-2006, 04:03 PM Hey neighbor! (Turlock)
Truck looks to be agreat start, mine came out of a 'barn' and looked lots worse off then yours does.
Keep plugging away at the truck and the Chevelle, it will get done one day
SCOTI 03-25-2006, 05:51 PM Any idea what that booster and m/c are from?
It looks like something off of a 81-87 chevy truck. It has the 2-extra holes @ the top of the firewall mounting bracket, the later style alum mstr cyl, & a big 11" (?) pancake booster.
Looks like a good truck to start with.:D
kevncar 03-25-2006, 11:01 PM Got a little more done today. Taking tomorrow off to go to the Goodguys show in Pleasanton with the family.
I managed to get all the front suspension and steering components off today and removed the motor stands and sway bar brackets.
I had noticed that the right front was about an inch-and-a-half lower than the left front. I always figured someone heated the springs to get it down and one side went lower than the other. As you can see, I was wrong. It looks like one coil from the top snap off?!?!
Anyways, all I now is I sure can't make a pile of old parts as fast as that Stacey guy from TRUCKS! can.
Now it's time to order parts.

kevncar 03-25-2006, 11:13 PM 67Shortie,
Looks like you have a collection similar to mine (truck/chevelle). I work in Modesto, so I drive right by ya everyday. I'd like to check out your rides sometime. Let me know. Are you going to the goodguys show?
kevncar 03-25-2006, 11:14 PM Heck...I just noticed...your a Raiders fan too!!!
Jayss109 03-25-2006, 11:16 PM my spring snapped in the same place! Glad I was already replacing it.

72armyswbtruck 03-26-2006, 12:40 AM Great lookin start, have fun and remember it gets alot worse before it gets better, but when it gets better it really gets better
kevncar 04-05-2006, 12:36 AM I don't know if it counts as progress or not, but I got one of the easiest steps done today. Ordered and picked-up parts!!!! I gotta do something to get my thread back near the first page.

I have also started cleaning up the front end to get it ready for paint. I test fit some tubular motor stands that I bought from a fellow board member. Found out that a 67 was a wider top flange on the channel frame that is going to require me to have to narrow it for the stands to work.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g71/kevncar/DSC01537Medium.jpg
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g71/kevncar/DSC01536Medium.jpg
I contacted performanceonline.com about this, and they said that I was the second one to have called with that problem. I posted the problem here on the board and naturally got a quick response telling me about the difference in the frame on the 67.
When I went to pick up my parts at Early Classic today, they also told me because I was putting a big-block in that I would have to narrow the frame. (I think because of clearance for exh. mani/hedders and well....just room for that big azz motor.)
If anyone is keeping track, there are only two differences between the 67 and the 68 and up frame.
1.) Wider top flange on the frame where the motor mounts bolt in.
2.) No dimple for power steering box.
I also hit the junkyard last weekend for a tilt-column (still need an intermediate shaft from a 69 and up) and a 3-1/2 turn power steering box.
I also am debating pulling the cab so I can remove the old manual tranny crossmember. I am looking for a big window cab that is in good condition. My cab is a small window, needs rockers and it has been hit and very poorly repaired in the drivers door jamb. I'd like to do this before I put the tilt in, but we'll see. I'd like to have this thing on the road sometime this spring too.
Hope to make progress this weekend, but it's my daughter's 4th birthday so we'll see. Wish me luck!!!
Joe67 04-05-2006, 06:59 AM Great progress and very nice pics
I love a nice stack of ECE parts :D
My '67 progress pics are in my sig
legends 04-05-2006, 08:12 AM could you post a picture of the mounts on the frame for the radiator support.
kevncar 04-05-2006, 02:24 PM thanks guys
legends, I'll get you a pic tonight. Just the little angle like bracket that the radiator support bolts to?
boraxman 04-05-2006, 02:47 PM I wouldnt mind that small back window so much, very defining and could end up being highly sought after some day.
:agree:
I like my small window. Good progress. Keep us updated.
kevncar 04-06-2006, 01:22 AM legends, I hope these are what you're looking for.

legends 04-06-2006, 09:40 AM Thats what i was looking for, thanks! What is the approximate diameter of the hole where the radiator support cushions go. Im putting a 67 front clip on a 71 frame and the holes seem too big.
alf1096 04-06-2006, 02:53 PM Did you just wire bush the fram to clean it ..... are you going to por-15...powdercoat it or what..
kevncar 04-06-2006, 03:30 PM I used a sanding disc called a Sandblaster. It attaches to a grinder and works really good. Last quite a while too. I am going to get it cleaned up a little and use Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator and Gloss Black Chassis paint. I probablly won't go as far as I have on cleaning some of this stuff down to bare metal. I just don't have a regular hand held wire brush right now, so I've been passing the time using the grinder so far. Now I'm getting in to a-arms and stuff and there is just no way to get into that stuff.
legends, I'll get a diameter tonight for ya
kevncar 04-06-2006, 10:21 PM legends,
about 1-1/8" to 1-3/16"
kevncar 04-22-2006, 06:41 PM Managed to spend a little time on the truck today. Mocked up the power steering box to get ready to dimple the frame. I also notched the frame to accept the motor mount towers. I'll smooth out the cuts more once I mock up the motor and see what kind of clearance I'll need for the headers. I tried to take some good pictures of the frame before clearancing for the PS box and how some talked of the box hitting the radiator support bracket. I clipped the corner off the bracket to clear.

Deuce 04-22-2006, 08:10 PM I was told when cutting a frame to drill holes on the corners to prevent the 90* cuts from cracking?? Don't know if it's true but it makes sense?? Get the new parts installed and post some more pics!!:c2:

You are absolutely correct. A frame builder taught me that many years ago. He always recommended when possible to drill holes at your corners then make the cuts. You can always clean up the cuts with a grinder.
In the case where the cuts have already been made a carbide bit in a die grinder will make quick work of a 90* corner.
Where did you get the sanding disc, are you using air or electric grinder?
kevncar 04-23-2006, 12:59 AM I actually work in the structural steel industry (buildings) and you are absolutely correct about the corners. If made to a corner, it's a excellent place for a crack to start. I actually didn't cut all the way to the corner. I cut just short of it and then grinded a very tight radius in the corner. It doesn't really matter though. I am just trying to get the motor in so I can see what else is going to need to be narrowed for header clearance and things. I plan on cutting much more out, more like the smooth arched cut the factory put in the 68-72s. The 67 frames don't have the narrowed frame.
As for grinding discs, the majority of the cleaning was done with a "Sandblaster" grinding wheel that I bought at Lowe's which fits on my 4-1/2" angle grinder. (electric)

Works great and seems to be lasting a very long time considering the really sharp edged stuff I've been cleaning. I've heard claims you can strip an enitre car with one of these things. I think it's quite possible.
As for cutting and aggressive grinding, it's stuff a buddy gave me, a cut-off disc and some kind of metal grinding disc.

Kevncar,
Are you still looking for a big window cab? I saw one in a junkyard today and it's only a few miles down the road from where you are........Flat 67
Hart_Rod 04-23-2006, 09:21 AM Good thread, keep the pics coming!
LONGHAIR 04-23-2006, 09:50 AM Before you get much more intense............it would be a very good idea to put an empty block on those mounts. Modifications like that can bite you if you don't check things as you go..............do ask me how I know this.
I probably would have tried it before even cutting what you have
kevncar 04-24-2006, 12:28 AM Thanks for the heads up longhair. That's exactly what I'm getting to. I just got those mounts in and now I need to get the manual trans crossmember out, and I'm going to drop the motor and tranny in and see how everything fits. The thing about the cuts that I've made is...I'd have to cut the frame even if I went with the stock BB mounts. If you look at any 68 and later frame, the top flange is narrowed already. They didn't do that on the 67s. I plan on making the cuts more like the factory cuts later, after I know how much I need to take out for header clearance and everything. See the following picture for an example of the factory cut.

Flat67, hit me with a PM on the cab, I'm still looking. What year was it? I think I have a guy locally here on the hook, but you never know. Thanks
Flat 67 04-29-2006, 06:21 PM Kevncar......check your PM's for a good deal on a cab.

67_CST 04-29-2006, 07:19 PM I agree that the small window is worth keeping. It was a one year only feature and looks really "vintage" to me. Heck, I looked for several years to find a decent small window cab so that I could build my "dream 67". I finally found a solid small window cab and it is just awaiting the rest of the parts now.
67Step 09-29-2007, 08:24 PM How did you dimple the frame for the power steering pump?
kevncar 09-30-2007, 06:10 PM A buddy came over with his torch and we heated the frame and bumped it out with a hammer and dolly. It isn't the prettiest, but the box is on there.
Palf70Step 09-30-2007, 06:37 PM I moved this to our build area for you. Glad you are making progress withit.
sergio rios 10-06-2007, 08:50 AM whats wrong with the small window,,,they are cool i got one too i love it..........
