Howdy;
back when I ran points and external coils , this was easy. Probably still is, just have to do it a little different now. Wanted to keep the hook up underhood, but is the best way to go under the dash , and hook to a fused source that comes on with the key ( accessory or ignition)? What do you fellas usually do here? Tried to hook to the "TACH" post on the HEI cap terminals, but that routed ALL the power to my choke, and, of course, the truck wouldn't run.

You could run off the same wire that is feeding the HEI.
If going to the fuse box, you'll want ignition... acc will be dead when cranking the engine over.

I ran the wire for the choke along eng-harnes through the fire wall to the run side on the switch.

Thanks, fellas. I know HEIs are picky about needing full 12 volts. This will go together quick.
