I have a HP Compaq NC6000 laptop I use at work. I recently lost the hard drive and our IT department replaced it. Anyways, after they did this I am getting terribly slow download speeds. 860-1721 kbps down and 4000 up. I tried two other PCs here at work and the download speeds on them were over 6000--I connected my laptop to those connections to see if that might be the problem but I still get the slow speeds. Where should I start in fixing this?

I have called the IT department but, since I am at a remote location, they won't be here for a couple days.

I can't even begin to fathom. i would try updating all of the drivers direct from the Compaq site to see if that fixes it. i would also turn off any firewall software which could potentially snag up traffic.

i've seen a heavily encrypted wireless connection versus wired connection have about that kind of ratio you're showing - where wireless will be around 1500 and wired will be 6000. the speed difference in that case is often caused by the overhead involved with the data encrypting on the sending end and decrypting on the receiving end.

Checking the driver was the first thing I did and that didn't yield anything. Something has happened because, after the new hd, I had good speed for a few weeks and all of a sudden it has fallen to a crawl. . .Maybe if I complain enough I will get a new laptop out of the deal--lost productivity ya know :metal:

Also, any chance this could be hardware related with my PC? Bad network card? I would think it would just die rather than slow down. . .

I had enough of this POS laptop so I figured out the solution (sort of) I asked for a new one and my boss gave me the green light. Getting a HP NC6220 2.13 ghz, 1gig ram, 80 gig hard drive, DVD+/-RW drive, etc. Almost got away with getting the NW8240 widescreen but got shot down because he said he wanted everyone to have the same machine--what a crock. I know this isn't a real fix but it's better than one. :metal:
