All the electrical stuff on this 86 works OK (except dash light dimmer) UNLESS I try to turn on the 4 way flashers. at that point if i hit the brake a front park light will come on- dash lights go out - and other assorted nightmares. The switch is JUST a switch inside the column right?? or is it one of those nightmare multi-task switches and it's prolly shorted out inside making the other things go nutty. ANYONE have this before, or as usual ,is it JUST ME :whine:

hello,,mine does that too,,4 way's on,step on brake and park lights come on,,however on mine there isn't a flasher installed for the 4 way's,went bad and i took it out..just happened to be working on steering colum and accidently pushed 4 way button in,,drove me nut's till i figured it out.don't know if thats your case or not,,,ALSO i had another similar problem and that one turned out to be a trailer hitch wiring harness shoved up in frame had shorted wires together.(the post is here in electrical somewhere).that one took 2 weeks to figure out...:)

One other thing to look at it the bulbs. I had one where the filiment of one curcuit broken and fell over the lower one. starnge things happened when you turned on the signals or flashers. Bad grounds will also do the same thing.

WHOLLY crap, lesson to be learned here AGAIN! 20= years of working on thes etrucks but like i said i dont get many 84-up.
I looked at the fuse box saw only one flasher and haad already replaced that one. there is no place for a second one so I'm thinking,, how could US111 acidentally have pushed in his flasher while working on his column must have bigarmzz or something,LOL. I jogged out to the 85 parts truck i just bought and because the cluster is out of it I notice the OTHER flasher down near the gas pedal. Back to the 86 and nothing there???? back to the 85 for PARTS and plug it into the 86 and Uereka!! flashers work(partially) then find a shorted socket in one of the front park lights that wasn't working. Better than pulling the column apart!!!!!
Oh BTW,I had that whole trailer harness nightmare already. I found that by simply unplugging the rear harness under the bed and the problems went away up front so THEN I plugged it back in and started checking the harness wires and found it.

OH the fun continues. the 4 ways work fine now but Oil pressure , fuel and temp gauge bury downward now when i pull the headlights on. I Thought for sure that was a bad headlight switch but i changed it out for a good one and it does the same thing?????????????. DAVE
