I am computer handicapped so I'll try to explain my problem, then do my best to understand the answer. :)

I haven't noticed this situation with IE (which I rarely use), but it's been bugging me in Firefox. When using Search, either on this board (or others) or in Google, as soon as I start typing something in, up pops a list of everything I have ever searched for. I understand this might be convenient, but the list is getting quite extensive and filled with a lot of crap I am no longer interested in finding... not to mention many misspelled words. I would like to delete most or all of this stuff, but have no idea how to do it.

Any help would be appreciated -- and please keep it simple, because when it comes to computers, I am! ;)

normally this is called "autocomplete" and it can be turned off in the options of most programs. If you put the blinking cursor in the box you're typing in and - before typing anything - press the down arrow, a list of items should pop up. in most programs you can highlight an entry and press DELETE key, it will remove it.

i am not firefox friendly, i like IE7 way too much to use it, but ... i'm sure if you google for "autocomplete firefox off" you can find instructions on how to kill it.

In Firefox click on Tools > Options > Privacy > Saved Forms. Now click on Clear Saved Form Data Now. This will delete all the previous typed in search strings. It will also clear any previous data you may have entered in any online forms such as your name, address, etc. If you don't want to have this happen any longer, uncheck the box for Save information I enter in forms and Search Bar.

Thanks, guys, that took care of it. Shifty, I tried highlighting an entry and deleting, but it wouldn't delete. So I Googled as you said, and found this http://www.clearallhistory.com/clear-search-history.html#003 which has a bunch of info -- including exactly what Mike said to do! Perfect! Thanks again, I'm a happy camper. :D
