shifty 03-25-2007, 03:02 PM ill add insult to injury too, i broke my feed fitting (like you) and replaced it with a fitting i found at ACE hardware...... this fitting was on the fitting shelf (you know the ones that people get the fittings, and instead of putting it where it belongs they put it on the shelf below) it was only 1.25$, but didnt see another like it..altho i quit looking when i saw it... so shift hurry up and git it going......
Pump is reassembled with all new fittings (only cost a couple of bucks :)). I started the lines already also, and moutned my fuel pressure regulator. First two lines from pump to regulator are done, just need to complete the single main line to the front, which I want to take some time with to do it clean. I'm that much closer, but working on a computer for a board member today. Hope to finish the fuel lines by end of day, then need to get the tank primed, install the radiator hoses and fill it with coolant, then run a few wires. Won't get it finished today, but at least I'm close to cranking ....
68 short step 03-25-2007, 03:23 PM nice to see some progress.... where did you finally end up getting those fittings?
72CSTC5 03-25-2007, 03:54 PM Bed looks good. Looks like I will need to fill some spot weld dips for you to make sure it is completely smooth. That is the grey coating i was telling you about that would have to be sanded at least with some 180 grit da before applying a few coats of epoxy primer.
Carlos
shifty 03-25-2007, 05:38 PM nice to see some progress.... where did you finally end up getting those fittings?
I called Tanks, Inc and ordered them. $4 each after shipping, IIRC. I have one spare (I got three for ~$10) so ....
68 short step 03-30-2007, 11:31 PM took the rear fender off to make the gas fill...put it behind the reflector light....what i had to do was
-cut out metal backing behind the reflector
-drill 2 new holes to mount 97 s-10 (or any 88-98 GM truck) fuel door
-cut the fuel door down to size
-fabbed up a mounting plate for exisitng reflector
-tack welded the modded fuel door to the backing plate
-installed and put reflector on

IvelDesigns 03-31-2007, 12:07 AM nice work.
shifty 04-10-2007, 12:48 PM Ok, should fire mine up on sunday :D just can't drive it till the clutch assembly is taken care of :D hopefully this will be a motivator.
I also need to solve the gas filler problem as you have.
68 short step 04-10-2007, 11:06 PM good job... once you hear it fire up and run you'll get your MOJO back... and catch your second wind...
shifty 04-12-2007, 12:32 AM Damnit, you relocated your battery, didn't you? :D
Please tell me you have your old truck battery cables? If so, can I ask for the largest favor ever and have you:
A) Post a picture of them (pos and neg)
B) Measure the length of each piece of wire on each cable
This would be a huge help for me. I *am* still looking at a custom solution, but thought it would be wicked sweet if I could manage to find a "stock" solution for my wiring needs. F-body cables are too short by roughly 8" ... 8" costs a lot of $$$ :D
PS - I plan to fire up on Sunday. Got Marvell oil in each cylinder to free up the rings, just in case, will put royal purple in the filler tomorrow morning before work, and the block and radiator have both been filled separately. Just have three wires to attach in the engine bay, two gauges to attach in the cab, and two wires to run in the rear of the truck! I'll be sure to take a video of first fire-up
shifty 04-12-2007, 10:50 AM *bump* :D
68 short step 04-12-2007, 07:27 PM sorry shifty those got tossed along time ago.....but whats your question? im
doing a engine swap this weekend on a 72 c10.. and i can get you some pics and measurements saturday or sunday...
shifty 04-16-2007, 12:01 PM i got it figured out. typical example of me being overly anal again. I dropped the anality and got it all wired up. turned mine over last night, but didn't fire it yet. should get it fired tonight. more info available in the last post of my LS1tech thread (linked in sig). don't want to copy/paste or retype it all :D
68 short step 04-23-2007, 11:31 PM got the cab back from the body shop. put it on the frame with the help of 2 friends, and now am in the process of doing the trucks wiring...

mike nutt 04-24-2007, 05:51 AM the truck is coming along nicely. wiring is always fun !!! well keep up the good work, and the cab looks great . whats the color gonna be?
shifty 04-24-2007, 08:33 AM Nice to see some progress! Glad I'm not the only one :D I ordered one of those intake setups from Kennedy Offroad yesterday afternoon, and picked up an aux battery tray over the weekend. Hoping to get wired up myself weekend after next when I get to work on the truck again.
Curious - I'm going to be installing a resevoir for coolant in the near future. I have strongly considered just buying a generic plastic setup from the store and mounting it, but I also saw the billet setup you have (Summit sells those pretty cheap), and I'm curious if you could break down the individual components that make up the braided line you're connecting the two with, i.e.:
What is your radiator output (threaded? hose bib?)
What is the overflow tank input (threaded? hose bib?)
What size braided line did you use?
What is on each end of the braided line to allow it to interface with the overflow tank and radiator?
68 short step 04-24-2007, 06:39 PM the truck is coming along nicely. wiring is always fun !!! well keep up the good work, and the cab looks great . whats the color gonna be?
black with some "true fire" grafix's

72CSTC5 04-24-2007, 11:49 PM She is looking pretty darn good there. What did you end spraying on the bed that is black?
68 short step 04-24-2007, 11:53 PM thats the primer that i told ya about that just flakes off... i was gonna remove it with acetone, but got bored :) but it'll come off super easy with a compressed air or sanding...
72CSTC5 04-24-2007, 11:57 PM How did the cab come out? Looks good in the pics!
68 short step 04-25-2007, 12:05 AM all the metal work was done, new floors, inner and outer rockers, smothed the firewall, filled the gas fill hole, and removed dents and filled the mirror holes in the doors.... it still needs to be final sanded and and painted, but im trying to make it as easy as possible on you..
RACINJASON22 04-25-2007, 12:07 AM Lookin Good! And I'm usually into fleet sides but, I guess this site brings a greater appritiation of all of their variations. Keep up the GR8 work.:metal:

72CSTC5 04-25-2007, 12:19 AM Ready when you are! Did you see the pics of the finished Harley I did in the "General Discussion" area?
shifty 04-25-2007, 11:24 AM passenger side rear cab corner looks a little wavy - what's up with that?
Redaddiction 04-25-2007, 12:43 PM Looks good shifty. Are you driving your truck to dallas to have it painted or are you having it hauled?
Idaho Outlaw 04-25-2007, 01:33 PM Great progress! I can't waite to see it finished. I like the idea of Black with real looking flames.
shifty 04-25-2007, 02:12 PM Looks good shifty. Are you driving your truck to dallas to have it painted or are you having it hauled?
:haha:
If it were ever gonna end up in TX, it would probably haul its own ass!! :D
I seriously need to make it back, though. I want to stop back by the house in Arlington and the other in Mansfield to see what the neighborhood looks like and find out if anyone I know still lives there. I have a lot of damily down in San Antonio as well (Karnes City, and nearby) and need to pay them a visit too.
Hey 68ss - what is that bracket holding the intake to the radiator from? Just curious.
68 short step 04-25-2007, 07:03 PM :haha:
Hey 68ss - what is that bracket holding the intake to the radiator from? Just curious.
an angle (off a hacked up car trailer leaf spring perch) and the rod that supports the rear fender
71tahoe 04-25-2007, 08:48 PM I haven't found anything anywhere about e-brakes. (probably haven't looked hard enough) With the exhaust tucking, what plans do you have for the emergency brakes? I found some kits at Summit and Jegs for about $80-90. Any suggestions?
71tahoe 05-08-2007, 09:05 PM Ttt
68 short step 05-09-2007, 05:29 PM i have e-brake calipeers on the back, but as for the stock routing of the cables, it would interfer with the exhaust.. as of now i dont plan on running a ebrake... but should i choose to in the future i'll have the pervisions to do so..
68 short step 05-26-2007, 01:15 AM got some more parts and progress.... got my new oak bed with hidden fasteners in and just laid in there... also got my new eclipse head unit (radio) in..im still waiting on my chrome steering column and complete A/C system...

killer71 05-26-2007, 09:48 AM So when do you plan on painting? Nice bed wood, gonna look great! Was looking at your tranny cooler lines and how you routed them over the frame...will the cab miss them?
68 short step 05-27-2007, 12:30 PM yes the cab clears the lines...i hope to get it to paint here in a couple weeks... im trying to get the complete garage dedicated to the KillerLS1
68 short step 05-31-2007, 10:52 PM got more parts in today... my new complete electric A/C system with a 4 port bulkhead connection and a polished control head.. also got my ididit 33" steering column (for a 57-59 chevy truck) it appears to fit great, but ill do more indepth details when i get it installed......also got the bed wood stained to a better color, i think ,then the "natural" color it came as..

Hart_Rod 05-31-2007, 11:07 PM How did you determine which a/c setup you were going with?
68 short step 05-31-2007, 11:17 PM i wanted a bulkhead connection, for that smothed firewall look... also i wanted it to be electric for ,IMO, a smoother opperation..and i wanted it to fit nice and neat behind the dash...i got a hybred of sorts.. a sure fit condensor and dryer with hard lines from CLASSIC AUTO AIR, also got the custom hot rod complete a/c system (electric) with serpentine sadan compressor, with you cut to fit lines and fittings..... hurry quick to order it with a bracket to fit the sadan compressor on a ls1 in the stock location... from what i understand they started to produce the sure fit system for 67-72 trucks with LS1 engines, but they stopped...??? and theres only x amount of brackets they have untill they're sold out...
watahyahknow 06-01-2007, 02:56 AM the bed looks great the truck is close to riddler material , verry tastfull
68 short step 06-03-2007, 12:23 AM got the steering column installed. it fits perfect, only thing i had to do was "rought out" the stock hole to fit a 2.25 column in a 2" hole... also started to mount the A/C system got the under dash unit installed and started working on installing my vents.... and the last shot is how the truck looks now (altho dr side door isn't hung yet)

Have you mocked up the compressor yet? I saw these but wasn't sure whether they would work with the truck style accessory brackets. From what I understand they are for f-body or Corvette accessories.
I hope you have better luck with CAA than I have. Absolute nightmare so far...

Missing parts, missing instructions, incorrect parts, poor fitment, poor customer service... you name it. I just hope its all worth it once its in. You seem to be having better luck than me already. It took me almost a month to get the correct condenser brackets. They sent me the wrong one FIVE times!
Truck looks great. Good luck. -Chris

shifty 06-05-2007, 11:08 PM i hope you can get your driver's side inner fender on, that high pressure power steering line is looking awfully tall. I had to find a new low pressure line for that exact reason (it has to be as low as the low pressure line you have pictured in order to work!).

that's the best i can do you for right there. it doesn't show much - you just gotta pitch the lines inward (point towards radiator). your current low pressure line should be fine, but the high pressure will need to be angled at the radiator.
i can't take more shots right now, and probably won't be able to go look at the truck again until i get my new cast on my foot next wednesday -- it's hard to get downstairs to the basement.
henry3rd 06-08-2007, 05:10 PM what year are those caddi engine covers. Is that the proper term to call them?

JHART 06-11-2007, 08:40 PM I love reading these GenIII swap threads .... i'm telling you i have like 7 pages of notes written down.
You have done some seriously awesome work here ....
I'm starting my swap this month on the 25th as long as all goes to plan. Only difference is i am on a much lower budget. Only thing i am really spending the money on is the harness and reprogram from speartech. Not gonna use the stock harness. So if anyone needs one i have one laying here.
I am going with a 5.3L out of 2003 sivlerado. Got a 4L60E for free from a buddy thats getting rebuilt. Only thing i cant decide on is what cam to go with or should i stay stock? What do you think about he Vette manifolds vice the camero ones for exhaust?
I'm in the military so i am getting a hook up on some braided lines from the hydraulic shop over at AIMD. Should be fun.

72CSTC5 06-11-2007, 10:55 PM Yeah, I hammered out few dents in the fenders before I left work today and the other fender was finished stripped. Will cut out the rust spots first and one fender was bondo'd over a crack. Will drill the ends of the cracks and then weld shut before I epoxy, prime and find all of the dents.
72CSTC5 06-13-2007, 06:13 PM This rear fenders feel like the old cartoon where they ask "how many lumps he would like!" Oh well beats the heck out of patching a lot of rust in them. Here they are stripped, metal prepped and epoxied. I will get them mounted up so I can do the bodywork on them better mounted firm to the bed.

Vette manifs might require notching the frame. if you use 98-00 camaro manifs, no notch required. also cheaper.
i would bould it, get it running, then upgrade the cam and springs to 'vette Z06 cam and springs. i know someone who can get them mildly used for cheap. this is a really really nice upgrade for very few bucks and the HP increase is something in the 35-50HP range on an LS1, not sure about a 5.3, not sure why or how it would be diff't.
